"Oh, my. I could've sworn the hangar was down this hallway. Oh, why do they build these infernal ships so absurdly large?"
C-3PO[15]

TheImperial-class Star Destroyer (ISD) known generally as theImperial Star Destroyer or as anImpstar, was a product line of massive dagger-shapedcapital ships of theImperial Navy of theGalactic Empire and later thenaval branch of theFirst Order. The successor vessel to theVenator-class andImperator-class Star Destroyers, it consisted of three designs: theImperial I-class, theImperial II-class, and theInterdictor-class.

At its height, the Empire operated 25,000 Star Destroyers, with twenty-four assigned to each of the Empire's 1,024Sector Groups. TheImperial-class became the backbone of the Imperial Navy, hunting downRebel Alliance task forces, blockading unruly worlds and serving as launch bases forplanetary assaults.

Characteristics[]

Overview[]

TheImperial-class Star Destroyer was the successor of both theVenator-class Star Destroyer[5] and theImperator-class Star Destroyer, both used during theClone Wars by theGalactic Republic.[1]

Models[]

Imperial I-class[]

AnImperial I-class Star Destroyer

The first iteration of theImperial-class family, theImperial I-class Star Destroyer was considered "the face of theImperial Navy" and one of its most powerfulwarships. One of the most common vessels in the Empire's naval branch, a singleImperial I-class could subjugate an entire world or waste it throughorbital bombardment. Onebattle group with an Imperial I could lock down an entiresector.[16]

Imperial II-class[]

TheImperial II-class Star Destroyer was a successor to the originalImperial I-class. Almost indistinguishable to its predecessor, theImperial II-class had several key differences such as acommunications tower between its twodeflector shield generator domes instead of a tractor beam targeting array, heavier armament, a reinforced hull, and more advanced deflector shields.[16]

Interdictor-class[]

TheInterdictor-class Star Destroyer[17] was a derivative of theImperial-class that served as anInterdictor.[1] Unlike theImperial I-class andImperial II-class, theInterdictor-class Star Destroyer had a distinct command structure[18] and four spheroidalgravity well projectors.[19] The gravity well projectors were powerful enough to create an artificialgravity well called aninterdiction field. This field could be used to prevent ships from jumping intohyperspace,[20] as well as taking ships out of it.[21]

History[]

"With shipyards turning outImperial-class Star Destroyers, any revolt will be hard pressed to make so much as a dent in the Emperor's armor."

Imperial-class Star Destroyer schematics

TheImperial-Star Destroyer replaced the smallerVenator-class used by theGalactic Republic during theClone Wars and was generally theGalactic Empire'sstar cruiser of choice.[23] It was built upon the design of theImperator-class Star Destroyer[6] introduced near the end of the Clone Wars,[1] which appeared in small numbers[24] and witnessed limited service before theend of the conflict.[1]

At the height of its power, the Empire operated over 25,000 StarDestroyers.[11] The distinctive profile of theImperial-class instilled fear into thesoldiers ofrebellious factions, and the name of a Star Destroyer could be preceded by theship prefix ISD (standing for Imperial Star Destroyer). In a report to anadmiral,SeniorCommanderAlecia Beck referred to the ISDVehement.[25]

Roughlythirty years after theBattle of Endor, the newResurgent-class Star Destroyers were constructed to replace the agingImperial-class by the Empire's successor state, theFirst Order, and would borrow design philosophies from the highly respected and coveted ship.[14]

Behind the scenes[]

A Star Destroyer bridge

The "sandwich filling," as Lore AdvisorPablo Hidalgo called it, on a Star Destroyer is known behind the scenes as the "gack band."[26] According toStar Wars: Episode VIIThe Force Awakens directorJ.J. Abrams, his original vision, which was storyboarded, involved beginning the film with vessels from the New Republic towing anImperial-class Star Destroyer into the gravitational pull ofJakku, with the various shots being deliberately modeled after the famous opening sequence forA New Hope. After crashing, the wreckage was going to be scavenged byRey. Though the sequence was cut and ultimately replaced with theattack on Tuanul, animator Tim Grey recreated the original opening sequence in a YouTube video which was uploaded onFebruary 4,2018.[27] While working on theImperial-class Star Destroyers ofRogue One: A Star Wars Story, model makerJohn Knoll worked fromStar Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections to make sure that what the audience saw inside the ship matched what was known about Star Destroyers.[28]
