- "Noticeably larger and more heavily armed than the Venator, this new ship saw only very limited service before the war ended. But as far as the newly declared Empire was concerned, it represented the future."
- ―Historian Beaumont Kin inThe Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[4]
TheImperator-class Star Destroyer was a class ofStar Destroyer that was manufactured byKuat Drive Yards in19 BBY and pressed into service late into theClone Wars with theGalactic Republic. Appearing in small numbers, it witnessed limited service before theend of the war. After the war, Kuat Drive Yards reworked the design of theImperator-class into theImperial-class Star Destroyer, which became the centerpiece of theImperial Navy. ThehistorianBeaumont Kin wrote about theImperator-class in his bookThe Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire.
Characteristics[]
TheImperator-classStar Destroyer was manufactured byKuat Drive Yards to serve as a massive, powerful, and multi-functionalwarship.[3] It was one of the largest warships in theRepublic Navy.[2] It was larger and more heavily armed than theVenator-class Star Destroyer.[4]
History[]

TheImperator-class was modified and refined into its successor, theImperial-class (pictured).
- "The newImperator-class Star Destroyer began to exit KDY facilities toward the very end of the Clone Wars."
- ―Historian Beaumont Kin inThe Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[4]
In19 BBY, KDY built upon the design of theVenator-class Star Destroyer to create theImperator-class,[1] which was additionally designed by theGalactic Republic. With the design completed in the sameyear, theImperator-class Star Destroyer was introduced near the end of theClone Wars,[2] appearing in small numbers[3] and witnessing limited service before theend of the conflict.[2] Following theBattle of Coruscant, and thetransformation of the Republic into theGalactic Empire, KDY was contracted as the exclusive Imperial supplier of Star Destroyers for theImperial Navy.[1]
Later in 19BBY, KDY reworked theImperator-class[1] and re-christened it into theImperial-class,[4] and production of the refined Star Destroyer was increased under the Galactic Empire. TheImperial-class became a mainstay of the Imperial Navy, and it went on to have a distinguished career. As it was capable of laying waste to entireplanets, theImperial-class became the prime enforcer of the Empire and rendered its predecessor, theImperator-class, obsolete.[3]
In35 ABY,[5] thehistorian andResistance paramilitary memberBeaumont Kin mentioned theImperator-class Star Destroyer in several instances in[4] his[6]bookThe Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire. Surviving records from KDY were secretive of when they were informed of the forthcoming change ofImperator toImperial, to which Kin questioned if KDY was already aware of what was soon to transpire on thegalactic geopolitical level. Kin later cited a redacted file on titled "Renaming Protocol" in theImperator-class Star Destroyer section of theKuat Archives.[4]
Behind the scenes[]

In the current canon,Imperator-class Star Destroyers were introduced inStar Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon 20.
TheImperator-class Star Destroyer was first mentioned in the currentStar Warscanon in the "Starship Fact File" section of thetwentieth issue ofDe Agostini'sStar Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine,[2] which was released aroundMay 20,2015[7] and written byMark Newbold.[8] In theStar Wars Legends continuity, theImperator-classStar Destroyer was the initial name of theImperial I-class Star Destroyer, as established by the2005 reference bookStar Wars: Revenge of the Sith Incredible Cross-Sections, which was authored byCurtis Saxton.[9] InLatin, the word "imperātor" means "commander," "general," or "emperor."[10]
Although established to be a separate class of Star Destroyer, theseventy-fourth issue of the magazine states that theImperial-class was originally known as theImperator-class,[11] as does "Starships of the Empire and the Rebellion."[12] SinceStar Wars: Timelines, released in2023, reconfirms that theImperator-class was a separate Star Destroyer,[1] this article assumesBuild the Millennium Falcon's seventy-fourth issue andStar Wars Encyclopedia is incorrect.
