Plot summary[]

Exposition[]

During theNew Republic Era,Wedge Antilles makes a final call for the end-of-the-year family race of theHanna City Flight Academy onChandrila. It is the annual celebration of flight trainees and their families, which will be hosted by him. The billboard playing Antilles' message is raided for spareparts by aJawa.

Family life[]

Elsewhere, theTwi'lek adolescentAnnisoukaline Kalfus listens to Antilles' broadcast on a holoscreen. Her motherKalina Kalfus plays with a guitar before playing with a blow torch and welding theastromech droidZ-1. Anni says that she is about to head to the Academy, which draws her Mum's attention. Kalina asks if she is heading there for racing. Anni denies this is the case and asks about Z-1. After tinkering with the droid's pulley system, she says thathe is all fixed.

The droid stretches his body but it causes him to stumble and fall back says. Z-1 plays a video of a younger Anni and Kalina sitting together in astarfighter as Kalina does theRyloth Roll. Anni prepares to leave but Kalina insists on hugging her daughter and giving her lunch. Kalina chats with Z-1, saying it will be worth it when her daughter graduates from the Flight Academy. Kalina realizes that her daughter has left her lunch behind but Anni has already left on her transit.

The family race[]

At the Hanna City Flight Academy, severalairspeeders andstarfighters line up for a race. Antilles takes the opportunity to promote several branded products at his merchandise stall. While Anni is walking, aDidynon pilot questions Anni decision not to race. Anni lies that her mother is unavailable. Ahuman female pilot namedJulan Van Reeple mocks Kalina and Anni'sspacetug, describing it as aporta potty. When Antilles announces the presence of Julan and her pilot motherDorota Van Reeple, Julan dealers. The Didynon ask Anni why she lets Julan badmouth her. HisWookiee companion roars in agreement.

As the pilots prepare their vehicles, two Didynon racers laugh at a Wookiee child, accompanying his Wookiee racer parents in another speeder. The Wookiee responds by tearing the arms of his soft toy, prompting them to close their canopy in fear. Julan and Dorota climb into their dagger-shaped black racer. Anni watches from the grand stand. Before the race can commence, thedroid racing flag bearer is distracted by a fallen bra. Kalina arrives in her box-shaped speeder with Z-1 and calls for her daughter. Anni runs away in embarrassment but returns after her mum calls for her.

The latecomers[]

Kalina tells her daughter she forgot her lunch. Anni says that she didn't have to come but Kalina replies that she can make up for her missing work hours. Kalina learns about the family race from the announcer. Julan and Dorota tell Kalina and Anni to move their space tug. Kalina decides to take part in the race at the last minute, much to Anni's dismay. The racers race through the streets of Hanna City.

The Didynon pilot accidentally pulls off the the steering wheel, causing his vehicle to plummet to the ground. Anni tries to dissuade her mum but she is determined to participate in the family race. Kalina expresses a mild disappointment that her daughter concealed the race from her. The Wookiee family's speeder drifts out of the race after their child takes them off course. Kalina catches up with the Van Reeples' speeder. Anni tells Kalina that she is embarrassed by her mother, their speeder, and Z-1. This saddens Kalina. While Kalina is distracted, the Van Reeples ram their speeder into the Kalfus' spacetug, causing it to crash through a billboard.

Anni is shocked by the Van Reeples' dirty tactics but Kalina is not daunted and tells Z-1 to activate the thrusters. They find that Z-1 is clinging to the back of the space tug. She tells Anni that those are live cables and encourages her to take the helm while she helps Z-1. Anni is surprised that what she regards as a "piece of junk" can still fly despite the damage. She is also relieved to hear that her mum has rescued Z-1 and that the two are clinging onto a grappling cable. Kalina encourages Anni to continue the race.

Mother and daughter[]

Though the Van Reeples shoot at the Kalfus' space tug with aDeath Star–shaped laser cannon, the space tug recovers and manages to pull ahead of the Van Reeples' speeder. Julan attempts to shoot the space tug but misses. Dorota snatches the controls from her daughter and prepares to fire their laser cannon. Anni takes her space tug on theRyloth Roll with her mother and Z-1 still clinging on. While the Van Reeples are distracted, they collide with a structure, causing their vehicle to do somersaults.

A family hug

With Kalina and Z-1 safely on top of the space tug, Anni takes the space tug to the finish line, winning the race. Meanwhile, Julan grumbles it is not fair as she is smothered by the airbag. Antilles announces that the Kalfus family have won the race. When Kalina remarks that her daughter learned something at the Flight Academy, Anni replies that she learned a lot from her mother. She apologizes for not telling her mother about the race. Anni remarks that Kalina can be embarrassing. Kalina quips that she is embarrassing because she is her mother.
