"We are all the Republic."
―Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh[4]

TheHigh Republic Era, also known as theage of the High Republic, was a period oftime that lasted from around500 BBY to100 BBY in which theGalactic Republic was said to be at its zenith and was seen as a beacon of hope and prosperity asthe galaxy enjoyed stability. It was considered a time of expansion, exploration, and scientific innovation for the Republic, whileJedi Order was significantly more spread out across thegalaxy, and was incredibly open, diverse, and accepting. Indeed, the era was also known as theGolden Age of the Jedi.

History[]

Age of Exploration[]

An emerging golden age[]

"But this is what the Order was for me. Agolden age. About eight centuries after we ended the rule of Sith Lord Darth Bane."
―The memory of Jedi Master Elzar Mann[17]

The High Republic Era,[18] or age of the High Republic,[19] was a period of time long after theFall of the Old Republic[3] during the zenith of theRepublic Era that began around500 BBY and ended in100 BBY.[1] It was considered a time of expansion and exploration for theGalactic Republic but most significantly was considered atime of peace. The Galactic Republic was seen as a successful beacon of hope and prosperity at this time.[20] While the galaxy would face conflicts and troubles during the era, it was remembered overall as the most prosperous time ingalactic history[21] as of35 ABY.[1]

Around 500 BBY, the Republic set out to expand its sheltered influence[1] on only theCore Worlds and theColonies region to the greaterOuter Rim Territories,[20] beginning what was known as the Age of Exploration.[1] This unreached area of the Outer Rim was called theGalactic Frontier and was filled with hardship and scarceness without the influence of the Republic. The Republic established theOffice of the Frontier, where people and worlds from the Frontier could apply for aid from the Republic or theJedi.[6]

By the era's start, theSith Order had beendestroyed in a battle[22] foughtover 500 years prior.[1] While the Sith in fact survived through theSith LordDarth Bane, who reformed the Sith under theRule of Two that decreed only aSith Master andSith apprentice could exist at the same time, the Jedi learned of Bane's existence[23] and would come to believe Bane's rule was destroyed at their hands, helping to usher in the golden age without the Sith.[17] In reality, the Sith Order survived in secret via the Rule of Two.[24]

Pathfinding[]

As Co-Chancellors Orlen Mollo and Kyong Greylark led the Republic during its age of exploration.

As Co-Chancellors Orlen Mollo and Kyong Greylark led the Republic during its age of exploration.

By around392 BBY,[1]Kyong Greylark andOrlen Mollo were Co-Chancellors of the Galactic Republic. Greylark was the more politically active of the two, largely staying on Coruscant and dealing with the everyday operations and politics of the government while Mollo traveled the outer reaches of the Republic to oversee its affairs.[6] Around that year,[1] in an effort to unite the galaxy, the two, working alongside the Jedi Order discharged RepublicOuter Rim Exploration Teams to the far reaches of the Outer Rim.[6] Their missions were to find new hyperspace routes, make contact with isolated planets, and establish a communications network throughout the Outer Rim.[25] These teams usually consisted of a pilot, a Jedi Master, a Jedi Padawan, a medic, anEX droid, and a GT droid.[26] EX comms droids assisted with discoveries, with the EX droids sending back messages to thecommunications teams who assisted Pathfinders,[25] often flying through space to deliver said messages.[6]

Around383 BBY, theGreat Hyperspace Rush occurred,[1] due to the popularity ofhyperspaceprospecting at this time due to the largely unexplored nature of the Outer Rim.[20] During the rush, explorers risked their lives in dangerous, uncharted areas of the Outer Rim as they raced to map newHyperspace routes.[1] Two prominent families, theSan Tekka clan and theGraf family rose to prominence due to their hyperspace prospecting endeavors and successes.[20] However, communication was unreliable during this time. The Galactic Frontier suffered especially, as the region had few organized communication networks. The unknown of the frontier and greater spawned many tall tales of mysterious planets and monstrous creatures.Piracy was also abundant during this time due to the limited reach of the Republic and many pirates roamed the Frontier.[6] One of the most famous was thePirate QueenMaz Kanata who hosted many other notorious pirates and scoundrels at hercastle on theplanetTakodana,as well as hercrew. Stories of her and the pirates of Takodana Castle were largely spread by renowned prospectorDexter Jettster.[27]

The Jedi and the Path[]

The Jedi of the High Republic Era.

The Jedi of the High Republic Era.

TheJedi Order was at its height during the High Republic Era[28] and in a golden age,[29] during which it was incredibly open, diverse, and accepting.[4][9] They were a distinctly separate entity from the Galactic Republic, but still helped it and worked alongside it all while continuing their central constant fight for peace.[6] Their influence spanned the galaxy, as they had many outposts throughout it.[2] In382 BBY,[30] a Jedi namedBarash Silvain started what became known as theBarash Vow, in which Jedi were allowed to become isolated hermits that spent all of their time trying to listen to and reconnect with the Force.[31] The Jedi Order also allowed Jedi to becomeWayseekers during this time, which were Jedi that did not follow theJedi Council and only nomadically followed the will of the Force.[6]

In the same year,[32] as Pathfinder teams were still being sent on missions by the co-chancellors, thePath of the Open Hand, an extremist cult that believed that no one should be allowed to use the Force because it would have devastating effects on the galaxy gained prominence.[20] They utilized theEiram and E'ronoh War to recruit and expand their influence, deliberately stoking the flames of the war.[6] Based onDalna, the Path expanded using its flagship, theGaze Electric, led by a woman calledthe Mother. She came into possession of a living weapon[20] known as aNameless[33] that could be used againstForce-sensitives, calling the creature theLeveler, thanks to hyperspace prospectorRadicaz "Sunshine" Dobbs.[20] The Path came into extreme conflict with the Jedi Order on both the the holymoonJedha and Dalna at this time.[34]

The Final Protector falls during the Battle of Jedha

The Final Protector falls during the Battle of Jedha

Jedha was seen as a beacon of balance, cooperation, and light during the High Republic Era. It was home to many different Force sects that largely coexisted peacefully.[34] By 382 BBY,[35] aConvocation of the Force had been newly established on Jedha that was intended to create more cooperation from different sects. It was comprised of representatives from many different groups, who made decisions that would affect all of them and the Force. However, after they attempted to co-opt theSeason of Light and turn it into theFestival of Balance, they accidentally increased tensions and lost support. While tensions were rising, the planets Eiram and E'ronoh chose Jedha to be the location where they would sign their peace treaty due to its reputation of peace and unity. However, at the same time the Path of the Open Hand petitioned the Convocation to let them become members and to outlaw any usage of the Force due to their beliefs. After both requests were rejected, theHerald, one of the Path's leaders, incensed the already tense sects and civilians into a riot. The riot eventually spread to the location the peace treaty was being signed, ruining the ceremony and starting conflict between the two planets. All of this fighting erupted into what became known as theBattle of Jedha. During the battle, the massive statue of a Jedi outside theHoly City called theFinal Protector fell.[34]

The Pathcollected many more Nameless from their homeworld,Planet X. Still, one member of the Path,Bokana Koss, experienced a Force vision of theUnder-Dwellers while on world and realized that they were playing into the creatures' hopes, foretelling that they would spread as ablight upon the galaxy that would destroy the Force itself. Ignoring Koss's warning, the Path team escaped with the eggs despite a being Koss identified as "theprotector" trying to stop their escape. The Path and the Jedi would fight their final battle on Dalna with theNight of Sorrow. However, Marda Ro survived and killed the Mother with the Leveler, focusing her efforts on freeing the Force by founding theNihil.[36] As the Path was dissolved in the wake of the Night of Sorrow,[37] its members split off into various descended groups, such as theElders of the Path[38] and the Nihil.[39]

With their armies having joined together to help the Jedi in the fight against the Path,[7] the peoples of Eiram and E'ronoh shifted into acold war.[38] The JediAzlin Rell was driven mad with fear after his encounter with a Nameless on Dalna and wrote about the creatures in ajournal, which he left in the possession of his friend and fellow JediArkoff before[40] leaving the Order.[33] Arkoff left the journal under the guard of his droidZZ-10 on the planetBanchii.[40] By330 BBY, the Age of Exploration reached its end.[1]

A unified Republic[]

"You know I envision a galaxy of Great Works — connected and inspiring and filled with peace for all citizens. I believe this is possible, but not because of me, or any special ability of mine. I believe it is possible because of us. Because we can and will work together to achieve it. We are, every one of us, a great work. I see a galaxy where we use our strengths to shore up each other's weaknesses, where we understand and celebrate our differences and hold them up as valuable. We are a Republic where every voice matters, whether in the Core or on the farthest planet at the edge of the Rim."
―Lina Soh's speech at theDedication of the Starlight Beacon[4]
Starlight Beacon was constructed in the Outer Rim during the height of the Galactic Republic.

Starlight Beacon was constructed in the Outer Rim during the height of the Galactic Republic.

As the High Republic Era went on, with the Core Worlds and Colonies overpopulated, many poor citizens moved to the dangerous Outer Rim Territories, where theGalactic Republic hoped to expand. Under the leadership ofSupreme ChancellorLina Soh, and due to her projects she calledGreat Works, the Republic supported the dreams of its citizens, even spreading a slogan that every citizen represented the government. Although the government was not perfect, it was supported by the variousspecies that lived under its rule. When there was conflict or another type of crisis, one of the earliest of the Great Works, theSalvation-class Republic medical frigatePanacea, was deployed to provide aid.[4]

During this time, the galaxy was not as settled as it was by the time of theGalactic Civil War, as areas like the Outer Rim were dangerous and difficult to navigate. In response, an enormousspace station called theStarlight Beacon, one of Chancellor Soh's Great Works, was constructed at a great effort and expense and placed in the center of the dark zones. The station would send out a signal that acted as a beacon, helping travelers find their way.[8]

During this era, theGalactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts was founded by a group ofscientists and adventurers that were interested in researching and cataloguing the myriad of new species that were discovered on the Republic'sfrontier worlds. The group started with small dinner meetings and amonthly newsletter. Over thecenturies, the group expanded to be one of the largest supporters of wilderness preservation and education. The group also produced a large variety of educational programming on theHoloNet. The Society instructedServ-O-Droid, Inc. to buildSafari droids for assignments in dangerous environments. Thesedroids were programmed to autonomously document and interact with wild creatures and report back to the Society.[41]

Crisis amid peace[]

The Great Disaster occurred when giant pieces of debris were shot out of hyperspace at near lightspeed.

The Great Disaster occurred when giant pieces of debris were shot out of hyperspace at near lightspeed.

A critical transportation disaster known as theGreat Hyperspace Disaster also occurred during the High Republic Era, initiated after theFreighterLegacy Run came apart inhyperspace, causing large pieces of debris to be shot out of hyperspace at near lightspeed[4] and manystarships across thegalaxy to be suddenly kicked out of hyperspace.[42] The debris primarily threatened theHetzal system, which was a major provider offoodstuffs in the Outer Rim, and the lives of billions of people who lived there. Many Jedi, largely aboard the starshipAtaraxia, arrived to help save lives.[4]

Avar Kriss, who was a pre-eminentJedi Master from the period, became known as the "Hero ofHetzal" for her efforts in leading a group of Jedi to rescue civilians during the Great Hyperspace Disaster.[43] Kriss prevented a giant tank of liquidtibanna from colliding with theHetzal system's largest star by using her unique ability to create anetwork with the force to connect Jedi across the system and the galaxy to help move the tank with the force. By changing the tank's trajectory, they prevented the destruction of the entire system that the collision could have caused. However, the Great Disaster would lead to theEmergences, which were a series of disasters in which fragments of the wreckage of theLegacy Run continued to emerge from hyperspace across the Outer Rim Territories, colliding with several planets and other astronomical objects and killing billions. The danger of the Emergences forced Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh to close off several regions of the Outer Rim from hyperspace travel.[4]

The marauder group known as the Nihil were soon discovered to be responsible for the tragedy. Using their powerfulPath engines, which allowed them to travel through hyperspace in unorthodox and inexplicable ways, one of theirStormships ended up in theLegacy Run's path in hyperspace, as had been orchestrated by[4] Marda's descendant,[44] theEye of the NihilMarchion Ro.[4] The culmination of the Ro family's plot for revenge against the Jedi and Republic,[44] Ro had his personalfamily history with the Jedi and thus wanted to destroy them. He also hated the Republic, believing it did not offer true freedom, which was a common sentiment among the Nihil.[4] Deep down, Ro fought only for himself, believing that no government had a right to command him.[14] Being able to know when the next emergences would appear, several groups of Nihil attempted to extort planets that they knew would be hit by offering to stop the debris in exchange for money. Marchion Ro and the Nihil also staged a raid on the planet Elphrona, kidnapping the Blythe family in order to lure the Jedi stationed on the planet to the planet's outpost in order to capture at least one of them. Ro successfully captured Jedi MasterLoden Greatstorm, though the other Jedi, including hisPadawanBell Zettifar, believed him to be dead.[4]

In response to the disaster, the Republic and the Jedi worked together to confront the Nihil at theKur Nebula, marking the first time the Jedi had performed a military action in generations. Joined by forces from the planetEriadu, the Republic and the Jedi defeated the Nihil in what would be known as theBattle of Kur. However, Marchion Ro had secretly only sent a single Tempest, led by Kassav Milliko, to the Nebula in order to convince the Jedi that the Nihil had been defeated, even though it was only a third of his forces. After the battle, the hyperspace lanes in the Outer Rim were reopened. TheDedication of Starlight Beacon then occurred, and the station was opened to the galaxy.[4]

Infestation on the frontier[]

The Drengir were unleashed upon the Outer Rim during the High Republic Era.

The Drengir were unleashed upon the Outer Rim during the High Republic Era.

As a consequence of the Great Disaster, an ancient species of amorphoussentientcarnivorousplant-like creatures known as theDrengir were accidentally awakened aboard theAmaxine space station on theGalactic Frontier when travelers forced out of hyperspace were forced to stop at the station. Both the Jedi and the Nihil fought the Drengir aboard the station, with the Jedi even decompressing the entire station to suck the Drengir out into space. While the Jedi believed they had seen the last of the Drengir,[45] the events on the Amaxine station awakened many sleeping Drengir across the Outer Rim andHutt Space, causing acrisis. The Jedi of Starlight Beacon were sent to confront the Drengir on many planets and save lives. The Jedi joined forces with theHutt Cartel to fight the Drengir after conducting a mission to the Hutt worldSedri Minor, where they came face to face with Hutt leaderMyarga Anjiliac Atirue. The Hutts agreed to the alliance because their homeworldNal Hutta had been devastated by the Drengir as well as many planets in Hutt Space.[46]

After the Jedi fought alongside the Hutts against the Drengir on many planets across the Outer Rim,Jedi KnightKeeve Trennis was able to discover the location of the Drengir leader, theGreat Progenitor, on theWild Space planetMulita after reaching into the Drengir'shive mind.[5] This led to theAssault on Mulita, where the Jedi of Starlight Beacon, many from their postings across the Outer Rim, and the forces of the Hutt Clan engaged in an all out assault against the Progenitor, until she was finally captured and put instasis. However, the alliance between the Jedi and the Hutts was broken by a moral quarrel about whether or not to kill the Progenitor.[47]

Reemergence of the Nihil[]

"I mean the Republic, building its Starlight Beacon out in my territory. Invading, taking over, with all its rules and laws and particular brand of freedom that isn't free at all. And you Jedi always just behind, absolutely convinced that every action you take is right and good. My family learned that to its cost, long ago."
―Marchion Ro, to Jedi MasterLoden Greatstorm[4]

During the Drengir crisis, the Nihil also reemerged, having not been defeated as the Jedi and Republic believed.[9] The marauders had helped seed the Drengir across the Outer Rim to distract the Jedi from their next target: TheValo Republic Fair.[48] TheRepublic Fair was another one of Chancellor Soh's Great Works meant to unite the galaxy and show that they had recovered from the Great Hyperspace Disaster and Emergences. Representatives and showpieces from all over the galaxy were present, including theTogruta government, who the Republic wished to recruit into the Republic. However, the Nihil destroyed the fair, killing hundreds of thousands. The marauders also disabled communications on the planet so that they could not call for help. The Nihil also targeted a research vessel on display at the fair, theInnovator, created by theCyclorrians for the Republic as a symbol of progress. The vessel sank inLake Lonisa during the attack. The Nihil also spread a giantWar cloud of toxic gas across the entire fair and destroyed sky islands known as theWorld Pavilions that represented the different planets of the Republic.[9]

After communications were restored by Jedi PadawanRam Jomaram, the Nihil were eventually stopped by the Jedi, Republic, andTrogruta forces, but many escaped. This included the Tempest ofPan Eyta, who would later attack theCyclor shipyards with the intention to further damage the power and respect of the Republic. But the Galactic Republic and the Jedi helping them were prepared and retaliated against the Nihil, completely decimatingPan Eyta's Tempest. The Jedi were able to locate the Nihil base onGrizal after placing Jedi stowaways aboard a Nihil ship, allowing them to activate ahoming beacon upon their arrival on theplanet. Once the signal was received, Jedi MasterStellan Gios and hisRed Group departed the ongoingSecond Battle of Cyclor, arriving at Grizal and assaulting the base. During the attack,Jedi PadawanBell Zettifar was briefly reunited with his thought-deadMaster,Loden Greatstorm, who had been a prisoner of the Nihil. However, Marchion Ro unleashed a living weapon called theGreat Leveler against the Jedi, killing Greatstorm and traumatizing Zettifar.[9] In the aftermath, the Jedi assumed that theTwi'lek Tempest Runner Lourna Dee, who had escaped the battle, was the leader of the Nihil.[49]

After the Nihil's attack on Valo, the prestigious Graf family partnered with the Nihil, specifically Tempest Runner Lourna Dee, to develop hyperspace technology. To pursue their efforts, the Nihil offered to give scientistChancey Yarrow access to the hyperspace 'oracle'Mari San Tekka so that she could finally develop thegravity well projector like she always wanted. Yarrow successfully developed her gravity well projector in the form of a space station known as theGravity's Heart in theBerenge sector. The station had the ability to pull starships out of hyperspace from all over the galaxy and bring them to the Berenge sector, and did so on a few occasions. After the station was discovered by a group of Jedi and destroyed by the Republic Defense Coalition, Yarrow took up work for the Grafs, who still wished to experiment with hyperspace.[50]

Counterstrike[]

As a response to the attack on the fair, the Republic launchedOperation: Counterstrike to wipe out the Nihil. As part of this campaign, the Republic and Jedi engaged the Nihil on various fronts, including the planetsCarlac,Magaveene, and in theDreighton Nebula. The Republic and Jedi alsobattled the Nihil in theGalov system, where the marauders were attempting to take over the space stationRelay Post Epsilon One. The Jedi and the Republic won the battle and incorrectly believed that they killed the leader of the Nihil in the form of Lourna Dee, but the Nihil still managed to destroy the station.[49] The Jedi of Starlight Beacon also went against the wishes of theJedi Council and performed an infiltration of the Nihil by having Jedi Knights Keeve Trennis andTerec go undercover within the organization.[48] However, the Jedi were discovered on the planetXais when their former ally Myarga the Hutt revealed their identities after being captured by the Nihil. The Jedi attempted to escape, but were stopped by a still-alive Lourna Dee, who used the living weapon known as the Great Leveler against the Jedi.[51] However, Jedi aboard theAtaraxia arrived to Xais to rescue Trennis and Terec,[52] but they were unsuccessful in capturing Dee, as she escaped.[53] The Jedi also defended against a Nihilattack, defeating the Nihil, but not before they blew up theJedi Temple onTakodana. This attack was carried out by aNihil cell led byKrix Kamerat, who several Jedi from Starlight Beacon had been fighting and searching for.[54] The Jedi of Starlight Beacon eventually traced the headquarters of the Nihil cell to the planetDol'Har Hyde. The Republic and Jedibattled them in the air before another group of Jedi led a ground assault and captured Krix Kamerat.[13]

Operation: Counterstrike was a success, and after several missions and battles the Jedi and the Republic largely fractured and defeated the Nihil, leaving them running scared. One example of this was the Nihil Tempest RunnerKara Xoo, whose entiretempest was reduced to just those aboard her ship thePoisoned Barb. Kara Xoo started kidnapping children from the planetDalna in an attempt to increase the Nihil's numbers and raise true Nihil who were passionate about the cause. But her efforts were discovered and stopped by Jedi stationed on Dalna and Jedi KnightVernestra Rwoh. However, a Nihil scientist namedZadina Mkampa activated a crystalline power matrix that she had built that was tied to Dalna's crust, activating the planet's volcanic systems and causing a series ofgroundquakes and volcanic eruptions that threatened to devastate the planet. In response to this and Xoo's attack on the DalnanCapital city ofSaludad, theDalnan evacuation was initiated. The Dalnan evacuation was when Starlight Beacon was towed to Dalna primarily by theMPO-1400Purgill-class star cruiserHalcyon, though with the help of other ships, so that all ofDalna's citizens could be evacuated to the station before they could be killed by the disasters caused by the Nihil. It was organized by Jedi PadawanImri Cantaros. The evacuation was a success, and most of the people were saved.[10] During this era, the planetEiram also experienced a catastrophiccyclone natural disaster that devastated much of the planet. Starlight Beacon was subsequently towed again to the planet to assist with the recovery and rebuilding of the planet.[12]

With the Nihil largely scattered, Master Avar Kriss gathered a group of Jedi to pursue the Nihil Tempest Runner Lourna Dee, who they still mistakenly believed to be the Eye of the Nihil. Using a Nihil path engine that they recovered from the Battle of Grizal, the team of Jedi traveled aboard the Jedi starcruiserAtaraxia to theGreat Hall of the Nihil inNo-Space, which was the Nihil's main base. They fired at the Hall without provocation, which was unusual for Jedi, taking the Nihil by surprise. They then boarded the Hall andbattled with the many Nihil stationed there, including Tempest RunnerZeetar, who Kriss killed by reflecting hisflamethrower fire back at him. The Jedi were sent throughout the hall to secure various areas while Kriss went to find Dee. The Nihil stormships present were ordered to fire on the Hall by a desperate Lourna Dee, forcing the Jedi to have to save themselves and many Nihil from getting sucked out into space. Master Kriss confronted Lourna Dee, attacking her in a rage and engaging inlightsaber combat, before defeating her.[11] Kriss had to be talked down from killing a defenseless and defeated Dee in anger by Jedi Keeve Trennis. Kriss successfully captured Dee and detained her aboard theAtaraxia, planning to bring her back to Starlight Beacon. The Jedi left this critical battle with many Nihil prisoners onboard and incorrectly believing they had defeated the organization.[55]

Fall of Starlight Beacon[]

A falling star[]

Rocollected more Nameless from Planet X.[14] One of the most critical series of events during the High Republic Era would begin when Ro initiated a series of aerial attacks upon the planetsAleen,Yeksom,Japeal, andTais Brabbo. The attacks caused a refugee crisis as many fled those planets for Starlight Beacon and various Jedi Temples, though this was the outcome Marchion Ro was hoping for. The Nihil attacked many of the Jedi temples that the refugees went to in order to send a message, including theChespea Temple. Afterwards, Ro sent a team of three Nihil zealots on a mission to Starlight Beacon with the objective to sabotage the station and release powerful creatures onto the station[12] known as theNameless, which were the same species as the Great Leveler and acted as living weapons by affecting Jedi's connection to the Force.[56] The presence of the Nameless aboard the station successfully disturbed the Jedi's connection to the Force, thus weakening them significantly as well as preventing them from discovering or sensing the coming danger.[12]

The plan worked, and the infiltrators successfully caused anexplosion on Starlight Beacon, which rocked its engineering station and caused an immense amount of radiation to be released that practically divided the station into two halves: upper and lower. Those on the lower half managed to establish communications outside of the station with the help of the small starship called theVessel and its crew. However, the explosion had caused Starlight Beacon to start drifting towards the surface of Eiram, the planet it was orbiting which was still recovering from a brutal natural disaster. After the explosion took place, the Nameless were released onto the station, which generally weakened all of the Jedi and limited their ability to help. Many Jedi were also attacked and killed by the Nameless and turned into calcified husks just as Jedi Master Loden Greatstorm had been.[12] However, Jedi Master and Starlight Head of OperationsEstala Maru managed to singlehandedly hold the two halves of the station together with the force, all alone until Master Avar Kriss arrived and activated her network, connecting the Jedi on the station to help Maru. Meanwhile, Kriss's team of Jedi that had just returned from the Battle for No-Space helped rescue people on the top half of the station by leading them to the cruiserAtaraxia or toescape pods. But the Jedi eventually lost control of theAtaraxia when it was taken over by an escaped and rogue Lourna Dee.[57]

Shortly after, the top half of the station separated from the lower, and quickly fell into the atmosphere of Eiram, burning up, and killing all still on board. Several disputes and conflicts occurred on the lower half of the station between the different groups of people that had different ideas of how to escape, causing violent situations and adding to the chaos. But Padawan Bell Zettifar managed to rig an explosion to separate the medical tower from the rest of the station, and get all of the patients in it to an Eiram medical vessel. Meanwhile, two former Nihil who had been prisoners on the station, Chauncey Yarrow, an engineering and technological genius, and Nan, a talented spy and informant who previously worked for Marchion Ro, discovered that they could prevent the station from crash landing on Eiram by activating its thrusters. The two accessed the controls and Yarrow managed to begin to use them to activate the thrusters. But Chauncey Yarrow was killed by Jedi MasterElzar Mann, who mistakenly believed that Yarrow was a Nihil saboteur. This prevented any hope of the station not crash landing on Eiram, and forced Jedi Master Stellan Gios to manually control the thrusters so that Starlight Beacon would land in theocean and not on the city. Many had received word of the disaster via communications from theVessel and had arrived to help, but were left helpless to watch the destruction of the station. Even though Master Gios sacrificed himself to have the station crash land in the ocean of the planet Eiram, enormous waves still rattled the coastal areas and the water purification plant was destroyed again, but the complete destruction of the city was prevented. The Jedi who made it to the surface helped with the rebuilding effort of the coastal areas of Eiram and its cities.[12]

Operation on Corellia[]

Meanwhile, Marchion Ro had tasked Krix Kamerat and subsequently one of Kamerat's collaborators,Sabata Krill, with a long-term plan that began with leading a group of Nihil to the core world ofCorellia. The Nihil slowly began to grow their influence on Corellia and brought more and more Nihil to the planet as well as spread the ideology to people on the planet with the help ofCorellian elites likeNomar Tralmat. Sabata Krill and the cell deliberately stirred up aunion dispute on Corellia'smoonGus Talon by faking attacks by protestors, successfully drawing theCorellian Jedi andCorellian Security Forces away from Corellia. The ultimate plan was to wait for the destruction of Starlight Beacon and then steal a fleet of MPO-1400 Purgill-class star cruisers and RepublicLongbeam cruisers being built in theshipyards ofCoronet City. They planned to then travel to Starlight Beacon to appear as if they were Republic arriving to offer help, only to further bomb the station.[13]

However, a group of Jedi that traveled to Corellia to investigate the Nihil on the planet uncovered this plot through undercover missions and espionage and joined some Corellian citizens to fight against the Nihil and stop their plan from coming to fruition. When the Nihil unexpectedly faced this resistance, their plan shifted from bombing the Beacon before it crashed to bombing the crashed wreckage and surrounding areas. However, the Jedi and a contingent of Corellian citizens they gathered fought the Nihil in a longbattle. The Jedi and Corellians eventually managed to defeat the horde of Nihil that had infiltrated Corellia, and disabled or destroyed the star cruisers and Longbeams the Nihil planned to steal. With the leaders of the Nihil on Corellia dead or captured in the aftermath of the battle, and a large amount of the Nihil fighters killed, the Nihil cell on Corellia fell apart and scattered.[13]

Reign of the Nihil[]

After the destruction of the beacon, Marchion Ro revealed himself to the galaxy in abroadcast in which he told the galaxy that he was the leader of the Nihil and outlined his goals.[12] Chancellor Lina Soh wanted to strike back against the Nihil after the destruction of the beacon and asked Jedi Council for help. But the Jedi refused.[14] In response to the Nihil's weaponization of the Nameless aboard Starlight Beacon, the Jedi sent out arecall beacon urging all Jedi to leave the Outer Rim and return to Coruscant.[13][14] Even though the Jedi could not help them, Soh and the Republic sent theRepublic Defense Coalition Outreach Fleet to strike back against the Nihil and limit their power and influence. Unbeknownst to the Republic, Marchion Ro had developed technology known asstormseeds. These had the power to destroy starships traveling in hyperspace through areas of the galaxy they were activated in. Ro successfully used them against the Republic Defense Coalition Outreach Fleet anddestroyed it, managing to cut off ten Outer Rim sectors from the rest of the Republic. This changed the face of the galaxy, restricting Republic interference and presence in the Outer Rim and establishing the Nihil as the absolute controlling power in the region during this time.[14]

In pursuit of the journal Azlin Rell had written about the Nameless, Ro allied with former Path-hired mercenaryVol Garat[40] and ordered the Nihil toattack Banchii.[58] Digging through the ruins of theBanchii Jedi temple, the Nihil and Garat found the journal after Ro departed, but the still-active ZZ-10 sent a distress call to the now-Jedi Master Arkoff while distracting Garat with the story of how they found the journal. Arkoff arrived withSavina Besatrix Malagán and recovered the journal and ZZ-10.[40] The blight foretold by Bokana Koss[36] was spreading randomly across galactic planets[59] by228 BBY.[60] In order to finally stop the blight, the Jedi Order marshalled amission to planet X, in which they would bring the Nameless home to stop the blight. In the name of cementing himself, meanwhile, Ro was willing to let the blight destroy everything across the galaxy. He was captured andput on trial before the Senate, which he mocked as an ineffective institution. The Occlusion Zone, meanwhile, was dissolved and liberated.[15]

Late High Republic Era[]

The Nihil conflict[15] would not be remembered as a war[61] despite the devastation it had spread. Nonetheless, Chancellor Soh recognized that, thanks to the Nihils' successes against the Republic and with the decision of some worlds to not rejoin the government after the conflict's end, the Nihil had successfully created doubt in the promise of the Republic and opened the idea of secessionism.[15] The Nihil would be remembered in history as the primary threat faced by the High Republic Era-galaxy and, with their actions, countered the narrative of the High Republic Era as a time of peace.[21]

The High Republic age was fading[62] by132 BBY.[63] The Jedi had, to a certain degree, grown lax in hunting down possible dark side threats due to the lack of Sith activity, paving the way for the emergence[62] ofSith acolyteMae-ho Aniseya and herquest to kill theBrendok four.[64] In the late High Republic Era,Count Dooku was taken in by the Jedi Order. Near the end of the High Republic Era, Dooku passed hisInitiate Trials and was chosen byYoda as his Padawan. At this time, stories were told amongJedi Initiates aboutKlias Teradine, a Padawan who lived during the High Republic Era and discovered theArchive of Forbidden Artifacts.[65]

Legacy[]

"In the days of the High Republic, the galaxy was not as settled as it is now. Areas like the Outer Rim were dangerous, hard to navigate. So the people of that time built a huge space station at great effort and expense and placed it in the center of the dark zones. It sent out a signal that acted as a sort of beacon, helping travelers find their way. They gave that station an inspiring name, fitting its purpose."
Grek[8]

TheFirst Battle ofGeonosis was the largest deployment of Jedi since the High Republic Era.[66] During the ensuingClone Wars,GeneralGrievous attempted tosteal High Republic artifacts from theStellar Riselight cruiser.[67]

During theImperial Era, Jedi KnightCal Kestis discovered the remnants of a High Republic Era Jedi presence on the planetKoboh. This included the droidZN-A4 and High Republic Jedi KnightDagan Gera, who Kestis freed from being held in stasis in abacta tank. He learned of MasterSantari Khri and Gera's attempts to navigate theKoboh Abyss during the era from ZN-A4 and discovered that they were successful and had established atemple on a planet calledTanalorr within the Abyss that wasattacked by the Nihil. After Kestis freed him and learned of the Order's fall, Gera turned to the dark side and began a quest for power, forcing Kestis andhis crew to stop both him and fallen JediBode Akuna. Afterward, Kestis and his friends decided to use the temple on Tanalorr for theHidden Path, an organization that protected and smuggled Force-sensitives and Jedi.[68]

In3 ABY,[1] during theGalactic Civil War, aspiring JediLuke Skywalker discovered adamagedlightsaber pike from the High Republic Era in anoutpost onTempes.[69] When searching for more history and relics of the Jedi, Skywalker visited theLiving Sea ofGazian, avergence in the Force that contained the consciousnesses of many Jedi including High Republic Jedi Elzar Mann, who spoke to and advised Luke.[70]ArchaeologistDoctorChelli Aphra andSana Starros also explored the wreckage on Dol'har Hyde left by the battle fought there during the High Republic Era between the Jedi and Nihil in search of a Nihil Path engine.[71]

While on the search for the legendary Kezerat convoy, Skywalker and his compatriots attempted to use an old Path engine from the High Republic era Nihil marauders to find it, but ultimately ended up briefly stranded in the Nihil's old headquarters in No-space, the Great Hall of the Nihil.[72] Much later in his life, Skywalker and the galactic explorerLor San Tekkatraveled to aJedi outpost on the Outer Rim planetElphrona, located on the edge of theUnknown Regions. Given its distance from the Core, San Tekka speculated that theoutpost could have been built during the High Republic Era.[2]

In the aftermath of theBattle of Exegol, theResistance historian and academicBeaumont Kin wrote in the in-universe history bookThe Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire that the High Republic era was remembered by later generations as a period in galactic history when the Galactic Republic aimed to be a unifying force. He wrote that slogans such as "We are all the Republic" and "For Light and Life" were used to motivate ordinary citizens and the Jedi to move the galaxy forward. Kin criticized some historical studies on that period for focusing too much on idealism and overlooking the erosive agendas of certain senators and the Republic's initially lackluster response to the Nihil pirate groups, who caused significant civilian casualties before they were defeated. Despite these shortcomings, Kin argued that the High Republic era showed that the galaxy and its various institutions could be rallied against "emerging menaces." The idealism and unifying elements of the High Republic were used to inspire efforts to reform the Galactic Republic and the galaxy in successive centuries.[73]

Behind the scenes[]

"I think we're seeing this now in the world we're living in, which is that disasters are large scale catastrophes test systems. The way you can see the strength of a system, a government, a society—of its tools against the scope and scale of that catastrophe is to throw a disaster at it. So, the point of Light of the Jedi, in many ways, is to introduce the High Republic to a readership, to an audience. To show what it is capable of when it's at its height, and when things get really bad, here's how it solves problems."
―Charles Soule, author ofThe High Republic: Light of the Jedi[74]

The High Republic Era was first mentioned in the2019 audiodramaDooku: Jedi Lost,[65] but it was not identified until the2020 comicThe Rise of Kylo Ren.[2] It first appeared in a flashback in the comic "The Lost Stories, Part 1," published inStar Wars Adventures (2017) 30.[75] The era was created for theStar Wars: The High Republic multimedia initiative[76] which began in2021 with the novelThe High Republic: Light of the Jedi.[77] The era made its first on-screen appearance in the animated television seriesStar Wars: Young Jedi Adventures.[78] The 2024 live-action television seriesStar Wars: The Acolyte is set during the era,[79] as is the upcoming gameStar Wars Eclipse.[80] The era played a major role in the2023 gameStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, a story set during theImperial Era yet with High Republic Era characters and ruins, as well as flashbacks set during the time.[81]

A High Republic Era Jedi namedMaya Ranna was featured via hologram in the non-canonLEGO comic "The Battle Against Grievous," which was released withinLEGO Star Wars 109[82] onMay 17,2024, in Germany.[83] Within, the later Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker shows Ranna's hologram after discovering it in theJedi Archives, intending to learn a spinning move from her recording.[82]

  60. Star Wars: Timelines datesStarlight Beacon's destruction to230 BBY. The implementation of theGuardian Protocols, whichStar Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in229 BBY, took place oneweek afterStarlight Beacon's fall according toThe High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1. AsThe High Republic Adventures (2023) 4 takes place oneyear and two weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, it must be set in228 BBY. Since the events ofThe High Republic Adventures (2023) 6 are set immediately following the fourth issue and depict theexpansion of the Stormwall, the expansion must have taken place in the same year. Meanwhile, the events of "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: No Big Deal" include the Stormwall's expansion and also depict the start ofPikka Adren'spregnancy. A later story, "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: Sparks Fly," states that Adren is eightmonths pregnant during its events, indicating that it is set eight months after "No Big Deal," and therefore one year, eight months, and two weeks after the fall of Starlight Beacon. "Sparks Fly" is set during theBattle of Eriadu, an event that begins inThe High Republic Adventures Phase III - The Wedding Spectacular. AsStarWars.com Star Wars: The High Republic Chronological Reader's Guide onStarWars.com(article) (backup link) placesThe High Republic: Defy the Storm between the events of "No Big Deal" andThe Wedding Spectacular, its events must also be set in 228BBY.
