TheDune Sea was a vast, sandydesert that stretched across the surface ofTatooine. In theTatooine navigation system, it was located in theplanet's first quadrant.

The Dune Sea onTatooine was once the bed of an inland sea. In theTatooine navigation system, it was located in theplanet's first quadrant.
Extremetemperatures and lack ofwater made the area inhospitable to most lifeforms. AHuman could dehydrate after about thirtyminutes from overexposure.[6]
During the time of theInfinite Empire, aRakatanstar temple was built in a cave in theEastern Dune Sea.Revan and his companions found the map being guarded by akrayt dragon and used its information to discoverLehon.[2]

Jabba's Palace was located just beyond thesouthwestern border of this desert.[7][8] During his time on Tatooine,Obi-Wan Kenobi lived in ahut in theJundland Wastes that was also located near the southwestern edge of the sea.[9] The Dune Sea was home to thesarlacc that lived in theGreat Pit of Carkoon.[3]
Following the escape of thedroidsR2-D2 andC-3PO from their clutches, theGalactic Empire conducted a search of the entire planet.[1] During their search in the Dune Sea, theydiscovered a small cell ofAlliance to Restore the Republicsoldiers and wiped them out, as well as aTusken Raider camp nearby.[10]
In22 ABY,Tahiri Veila andAnakin Solo survived its harshest deserts, a krayt dragon, and a sarlacc, and exercised their growingForce powers.[11]
Behind the scenes[]
The real-world locations for the Dune Sea are theGrand Dune inTunisia andYuma Desert in California.
It is believed to be inspired byFrank Herbert's planetArrakis from theDune series.
The Dune Sea appears in a map in the2004video gameStar Wars: Battlefront. During the Historical Campaign, the battle on the map appears as an Imperial mission, although the game's story wassecondary continuity according toLeland Chee, the keeper ofLucasfilm'sHolocron continuity database.[12]
