"Do not cling to me like a dianoga! Attack!"
―Grievous[8]

Dianoga were largeomnivorouscephalopods thathailed from theplanetVodran in theSi'Klaata Cluster ofHutt Space. Although primitive, they were actuallysentient, and some dianoga weresensitive tothe Force.

Biology and appearance[]

Dianoga weresentient[1]cephalopods characterized by seven suckeredtentacles, aneyestalk, amouth of sharpteeth,[2] and severalhearts.[1] They could grow to a length of 7[4] to 10meters.[5] Theirblood had ablue tint.[1] Dianoga wereomnivores,[7] feeding on smaller animals likefish andcrabs, but also feed onbones and aquaticplants.[1] Thetrash squid was part of the Dianoga family.[3]

Although they could survive in the open air for short periods of time, dianoga were entirely dependent onwater, lest they completely dried out. While physicallyhermaphroditic, dianoga could choose to identify as female, diangous (the most common gender), or male. Themating process involved partners exchangingeggs with one another. The normal skin color of a mature individual was a deep purple, but dianoga could change their color and patterns for activecamouflage. They could notably turn black, gray, and even transparent. They also had the ability toregenerate lost limbs.[1]

Society and culture[]

Toothy, a juvenile dianoga

Dianoga had a primitive tribal culture. When they were not feeding, they oftenspoke a deep, complex humminglanguage. Because its reverberations carried so completely in the water, that language scared away all nearby prey. Their people venerated water, which they called "the Great Cleanser When It Was Time to Be Cleansed," and believed inreincarnation.[1]

History[]

Dianoga hailed fromVodran, aswampyplanet located in theSi'Klaata Cluster.[2] They shared their world with the sentientVodrans, who usually stayed well away from the deeper wetlands.[1]

Dianoga in the galaxy[]

"There's something alive in here."

One dianoga inhabited the junkyard worldBracca during theearly days of theGalactic Empire. The being made a home within the waters that flooded the remains of a derelictVenator-class Star Destroyer, one of manysuch vessels left for scrap on the planet.[6] In theyear19 BBY,[10] members of the rogueclone commandosquadClone Force 99 entered the wreckedcruiser, searching for amedical bay within theship. One of their number, the group's demolitions expertWrecker, briefly wrestled with the dianoga when he found himself dangling from a cable over the being's watery home.Blasterfire from the otherclones, however, drove the dianoga off and ended the encounter.[6]

During thetrade wars, thecollectorDok-Ondar offered topaycrime lordJabba the Hutt double if he threw inKi-Adi-Mundi's lightsaber with the dianoga pup he was selling to him.[11] At some point before theBattle of Yavin[1] in0 BBY,[12] a female dianoga namedOmi was captured by Vodrans, who handed her to members of the Empire en route to their newDeath Starbattle station. She was dumped into the Death Star'sgarbage masher 3263827, where she would feed on the organic materials that occasionally fell in.[1] During therescue ofLeia Organa,Luke Skywalker first realized something was alive in the garbage compactor, but shortly after his realization, Omi dragged Skywalker under the mucky water.Han Solo,Chewbacca, and Organa tried to help the struggling Skywalker, only for the dianoga released Luke just before the walls began to close.[9]

During theskirmish on theGhost Moon,SergeantKreel of theTask Force 99 also known as theSCAR Troopers have faced the dianoga in the sewers.[13]

Experiencedchefs could makegrilled dianoga into a tasty breakfast dish, but overcooking it would activate theblood parasites in the fatty tissue, destroying the flavor.[14]
