TheDefiance engaging TIE fighters
During theRebel Alliance's investigation of theGalactic Empire'sDeath Starsuperweapon,Red SquadronRebel pilotsKeyan Farlander andBreth Gart were temporarily assigned to theDefiance to aid in the training of newstarfighterpilots. Inorbit over[7] theplanet[8]Bestine,[1] theDefiance wasattacked by theImperial-class Star DestroyerImmortal which launched twosquadrons ofTIE/sa bombers,Gamma andDelta, to destroy it, escorted by theTIE/IN interceptors ofBeta Squadron. Though most of theDefiance's veteran pilots were away flying other missions,Blue and Red Squadron pilots, including Gart and Farlander, scrambled to theMon Calamari Star Cruiser's defense. The Rebel pilots and theDefiance'sgunners occupied the Imperial forces until the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser was able to jump to safety inhyperspace.[7]
During theevacuation ofYavin 4, theAlliance High Command requested theDefiance's presence in order to protect the Rebel ships attempting to escape the ImperialYavin blockade to hyperspace.[4]

Defiance, viewed from the stern
The vessel performed numerous missions, both individually and as part of a battle line. TheDefiance was commanded byAdmiralNammo throughout the Galactic Civil War. Its Tactical Officer was CommanderDevers, who assumed his position following the capture and brainwashing of his predecessor, CommanderKupalo.[2]

The concourse of theDefiance
In3 ABY,[9] theDefiance was thecommand ship of a Rebeltask force stationed far fromEcho Base,[2] the Alliance headquarters on theplanetHoth,[10] during itsevacuation. With the aim of rejoining the primaryAlliance Fleet under AdmiralGial Ackbar, the group fled from Hoth with survivors and personnel[2] to a secure Rebelsector.[11] TheDefiance, along with theNeutron Star-class bulk cruiserDiligent and theAssault Frigate Mark IHaven, was then based at aspace station known asLost Station for some time. There, Admiral Nammo granted refuge aboard theDefiance to theAzzameen family, fugitives from the Empire who had followedLieutenantOlin Garn, a Rebel pilot and friend ofAeron Azzameen. With Garn's encouragement,Ace Azzameen trained as a combat pilot and enlisted in the Calamari Cruiser's starfighter complement, which included Red, Blue, andGreen Groups.[2]
TheDefiance was hunted by Imperial AdmiralGarreth Holtz'sCorruptertask force, and served as a base for a series of operations conducted to distract and hinder the Imperial force and allow the Rebels to escape. The Calamari Cruiser's starfighters were dispatched on a diversionaryconvoyraid to draw the Empire's resources towards defense and away from their search, and areconnaissance operation that uncovered severe damage sustained by theCorrupter at Hoth. Subsequently, the force followed an informant's lead toliberate other survivors of Echo Base takenprisoner by the Empire, anddestroyed arepair team bound for the crippledCorrupter. Finally, theDefiance grouptargeted the Imperialsensor arrayIOS 24,[2] creating a gap in the Empire's surveillance network through which Calamari Cruiser and its support ships were able to escape into theOuter Rim Territories.[11]
The vessel later participated in theBattle of Endor as rear guard to the Alliance Fleet, and pursued Imperial ships after the Rebel victory.[12]
Following thetransformation of the Rebel Alliance into theNew Republic, Nammo and theDefiance were part of the new government'sThird Fleet. In6 ABY, Nammo and theDefiance were sent by Admiral Ackbar, now of theNew Republic Defense Fleet, tocapture the key Imperialshipyards ofBilbringi, but were defeated by the defending AdmiralTeren Rogriss and the181st Imperial Fighter Wing led byTurr Phennir.[6]
