TheConsular-class cruiser (Charger c70 retrofit), also known as theConsular-class frigate,Consular-class Armed Cruiser,Charger C70 Combat Refit or theRepublic frigate, was a modified variant ofConsular-class light cruiser that saw service with theGalactic Republic during theClone Wars. Converted fromJudicial Forces starships as part ofProject Supercharger, the combat-oriented Charger c70 featured new battle-armored hull andlaser turrets and proved a mainstay of theRepublic Navy during the conflict.

The Charger c70 retrofit, also known as the Republic frigate, was a product of theCorellian Engineering Corporation, based on the hull of the company's earlierConsular-class light cruiser;^[1] at 138.55-meters long,^[3] it was slightly larger than the original Consulars (at 115 meters).^[10] The most important difference between the Charger c70 and its predecessor, however, was its combat configuration.^[4] Unlike the unarmed Judicial cruiser,^[11] the Charger c70 was equipped with four turret-mounted heavylaser cannons (ventral port and starboard and dorsal port and starboard), a forward-mounted twin light laser cannon, and dorsal turret-mountedquad laser cannon. Furthermore, it was outfitted with forward twinconcussion missile launchers^[4] as well as armored hull plating.^[1]

Like the Consular, the Charger c70 had threesublight engines, though it could travel 1,200kilometers per hour.^[1] to theConsular-class's 900 kph.^[10] It featured a forward navigational sensor dish, a port and starboard docking ring, a communications and sensor dish towards the stern, and adeflector shield generator,^[1] with sturdier models introduced during the retrofit.^[4] The vessel was also equipped with fourRepublic escape pods and a detachablesalon pod in the bow below thebridge for diplomatic meetings.^[1]

Role[]

Republic frigates saw extensive use during the Clone Wars, and served in various roles; while they were often used as escort vessels and armoredtransports,^[5] they were also considered to excel in the role ofscout ship or picket.^[4] Some instances also saw them ashospital ships.^[8]

History[]

With theoutbreak of theClone Wars, the newly-formed and largely-unpreparedRepublic Navy was forced to press existing ship classes into combat; theConsular-class space cruiser, already in service with theJudicial Forces and theRepublic Diplomatic Corps, was selected for this purpose by theDepartment of Naval Procurement due to its speed and durability. In cooperation with Corellian Engineering, the Department initiatedProject Supercharger, with the objective to convert Consular frigates to a war footing.^[4] As early as theBattle of Christophsis^[12] in22 BBY,^[13] Charger c70s had entered service, with theSwift Return being destroyed byAdmiral Trench.^[12] During theBattle of Ryloth,Grand Master Yoda of theJedi Order made use of a Republic frigate totravel toRugosa with hisclone trooper escort in order to negotiate a possible alliance withKatuunko, theKing ofToydaria. When they arrived, the vessel was ambushed by a pair ofSeparatist Munificent-class star frigates.^[5]

Republic frigates also participated in theDefense of Rishi Station as part of the Republicfleet commanded by Kenobi and Skywalker.^[14] After Skywalker'sastromech droid,R2-D2, was obtained byGeneral Grievous, R2-D2's datafiles were intact, and Grievous was able to glance at Republic military strategies and information, including information on Republic frigates.^[15] After thecapture ofTrade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray onRodia,Jedi Master Luminara Unduli andPadawan Ahsoka Tano used a Republic frigate to ferry Gunray from the surface to theTranquility, aVenator-class Star Destroyer in orbit above Rodia, and docked with the vessel. After Separatist agents managed to liberate Gunray, they used the same Republic frigate to escape.^[9]

When Jedi GeneralAayla Secura'stask force were attacked by Separatist naval forces that culminated in theBattle of Quell, Skywalker, Tano, and their forces arrived to evacuate Secura and her troops. During the battle, a Republic frigate docked with Secura'sflagship Liberty, and after Skywalker sustained critical injuries during the escape, planned to dock with theResolute, Skywalker's flagship that was under the command of Admiral Yularen. During the docking procedure, however,vulture droid starfighters attacked the frigate, destroying its forward navigational dish and sensor, and damaging the bridge, killing thepilots. The damage inadvertently caused the vessel'shyperdrive to activate; it had to take evasive action to prevent a collision with theResolute and jumped intohyperspace in-atmosphere. When the frigate turned out to be on a collision course with astar, Secura, Tano, and others deactivated the power to exit hyperspace.^[16]
