Plot summary[]
The story begins withAdmiralThrawn,CommanderParck, andCaptainDagon Niriz voyaging beyond theboundaries of charted space aboard theImperial I-class Star DestroyerAdmonitor. Some of the ship's senior staff are wary of Thrawn'salien background and mysterious history. While posing as acolony ship, they encounter an alien convoy of theEbruchi, led by an enigmatic alien namedCreysis.
When Thrawn allows the Ebruchi captain to capture aTIE fighter as well as anImperialshuttle crew, ImperialgeneralHaverel believes the Admiral has gone too far and tries to forcibly stop him in an attempt mutiny. Though he is skeptical of Thrawn, Captain Niriz refuses to go along with the sedition, and Thrawn soon reveals his true intentions. The Ebruchi's “captures” were merely calculated ruses to gauge enemy strength and lull the aliens into a false sense of superiority. His objectives achieved, Thrawn wipes out the Ebruchispace vessels.
