Chewbacca's bowcaster was a traditionally hand-craftedbowcaster weapon belonging to theWookieeChewbacca.[7] Chewbacca built the bowcaster sometime prior to using it during theBattle of Kashyyyk in theClone Wars, in which the Wookiees ofKashyyyk and theGalactic Republic made a joint effort against theSeparatist Alliance.[3] After Chewbacca pledged alife debt toHan Solo and joined thesmuggler,[7] Chewbacca continued to use his bowcaster throughout theGalactic Civil War between theRebel Alliance and theGalactic Empire,[2][4][5] having crafted several bowcasters until then.[1]

The bowcaster required the strength of a Wookiee to fire the weapon comfortably, as it fired destructive metalquarrels sheathed inplasma energy[9] that would result in explosive impacts. Thirtyyears after theBattle of Endor,[7] Chewbacca and Solo wereengaged in a conflict on board theirheavy freighterEravana against theGuavian Death Gang andKanjiklub. There, for the first time, Solo used Chewbacca's bowcaster after the Wookiee was injured in the skirmish and immediately took a liking to the weapon.[6]

Chewbacca's bowcaster had a hand-woven strap made ofkshyyy-vine, and he carried abandolier that contained nineteen[8] ammo cases of one to three bowcaster quarrels each. Chewbacca's carry pouch also contained tools to keep his bowcaster operational.[7] Like all Wookiee gadgets, the bowcaster blended modern technology and traditional materials. Unlike Wookiee tradition, however, Chewbacca's bowcaster had an automatic cocking system for firing the weapon.[8] In addition, Chewbacca's most recent handcrafted bowcaster made use of thepower pack of anE-11 medium blaster rifle, a standard-issue weapon of theImperialstormtroopers.[1]
