Behind the scenes[]

The costume was created for the1999prequel trilogy,Star Wars: Episode IThe Phantom Menace, where it was worn byKeira Knightley as Sabé.[2] The finished costume was realized by costume designerTrisha Biggar. Though not worn byNatalie Portman in the film, the finished costume was photographed with Portman modeling it. Identified inDressing a Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars as "Travel Gown I," the costume included handmade lace fabric and a vintage jet-beaded back panel.[6] The spider web-like lace fabric took over a month for one person, working ten hours for five days a week, to create. Originally, the dress was sewn onto a special thin fabric backing, which was then dissolved in water to leave only the stitching on top. The dress was seamless, with each panel of the dress stitched directly onto another panel.[7]

  4. The name "traveling gown" is used inStar Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia for both theblack gown worn bySabé in disguise and the purple gown worn byPadmé Amidala; the latter is also called "traveling gown" inStar Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary, New Edition. While the purple one receives a more complete identification as the "dark purple traveling dress" inQueen's Peril, the subject of this article has not received a more distinct name; thus, a conjectural name is used to disguish which traveling gown it is.
