Description[]
Binders were common and basicprisoner restraint cuffs made ofdurasteel.[1] Binders were designed with the intent of keeping a consciousprisoner controlled and subdued.[2] They were strong enough to keep aWookiee's arms restrained,[3] and could be locked and secured by mechanicallocks,key-code chip readers, identity scanners,[1] or code inputs.[3]
Many different companies manufactured binders, includingLocris Syndicated Securities. While the products differed from each other, they shared the same basic design.[2]
History[]
Binders were an essential piece of equipment forbounty hunters.[2]

Imperial prisoners in binders
TheGeonosians used binders on their prisoners in their gladiatorial arenas onGeonosis. These binders had pulse lock points that welded the clasps tight. They also featured an electronic release mechanism.Obi-Wan Kenobi,Anakin Skywalker, andPadmé Amidala were fitted with such binders for their scheduled execution in thePetranaki arena, but were able to defeat their captors and executioners.[4]
Binders were used aboard thefirst Death Star to restrain dangerous prisoners.Han Solo fittedChewbacca with a pair of binders when he andLuke Skywalker posed asstormtroopers in their attempt torescueLeia Organa.[1] Skywalker was originally going to outfit Chewbacca with the binders, but he had Solo do it instead after theWookiee snarled at him.[5] They left the binders unlocked as they entered thedetention block, allowing the Wookiee to "break free" and aid his companions in the firefight that followed.[1]
