Bespin was agas giant in thestar system of the same name in theAnoat sector, its riches manifested in the form of raretibannagas. Attractingmining interests and remaining unaffiliated ingalacticaffairs,Ugnaughts were employed to extract tibanna fromrepulsorlifted facilities whilst Bespin's mostlyhuman population resided in the open upper levels, exposed to a thin layer of breathableatmosphere in an area known as a "Life Zone."
Description[]

TheMillennium Falcon approaches Cloud City, a floating settlement on the gas giant of Bespin.
Bespin was an immensegas giant located in the vicinity of theAnoat sector, a desolatesector ofthe galaxy.[6] Bespin had twomoons,[5] and itsgaseous mass contained a thin stratum of habitableatmosphere above a source of rare[6] and costlytibanna gas, although there was no habitable land orwater on the planet.[7] Theplanet completed a fullorbit around itsstar every 14standard-years and a full rotation every 12standard-hours. Viewed from the upper levels ofCloud City, in the breathable layer of the world, sunsets lasted 2 hours.[5]
Tibanna gas was harvested and refined in severalmining complexes, including CloudCity, an opulent metropolis suspended in the planet's huge billowingclouds, andChinook Station, afuel depot and refueling station. TheUgnaught city ofUgnorgrad also was located over the planet, being ruled byKingOzz in thetime after theBattle of Endor.[6] Cloud City processed tibanna to be sold off-world.[7]
Bespin was home to many types of life, which was rare for a gas giant. The planet had two sister worlds, from which it was separated by an asteroid belt called Velser's Ring.[5]
Swimming pools were considered a rare luxury on Bespin.[13]
History[]
During theGalactic Civil War, Bespin remained unaffiliated, but that did not prevent theGalactic Empire fromgarrisoning the planet and seizing Cloud City. However, with the Empire'sdefeat atEndor, the gas giant and its prosperous mining colony ended up recovering their freedom.[6]
Following theBattle ofExegol[14] in35 ABY,[15] Bespin was inopen rebellion against theFirst Order.[14]
Behind the scenes[]
Bespin first appeared in the1980 filmStar Wars: Episode VThe Empire Strikes Back,[8] although it was first mentioned in the magazineStar Wars Official Poster Monthly 18 as part of a preview of the second installment of theStar Wars saga. The issue was published inMarch,1979.[16] Thefirst draft ofThe Empire Strikes Back, includes a beautiful, jewel-like planet known asBesspin Kaalieda.[17]
Both theEncyclopedia and theDatabank entries for Bespin onStarWars.com says the gas giant was "surrounded by a number of moons."[6][18]Star Wars: Complete Locations, published in2016, establishes that the planet had two moons.[5]
