Theastromech socket,[1] also known as theastromech slot,astromech port,droid slot, ordroid socket, was a component of somestarships, usuallysnub-fighters, where anastromech droid could be attachedexternally to provide piloting assistance via acomputerinterface within the socket, and to provide maintenance to the vessel when required.
Astromech sockets were typically present near a ship's core mechanical compartment, namely theengines, of which could be in close proximity to the socket for maintenance accessibility.
In some cases, like thePhantom, an astromech was needed for a ship to enterhyperspace.[1]
