Amammalian species,[11] They could bebrown,[2] cream,[3] gray,[4] orange,[5] pink, or tan[4] in color, and those who were brown often had skin that was mottled with gray. Abednedo had fleshy, thin nostrils and blackeyes, which sat in sockets protruding from the side of their elongated head. Abednedo also possessed wattles, or facial tendrils, remnants of sensory organs that helped theirancestors to navigate underground in the dark.[11] They could grow hair above their eyes and on the side[4] and back[14] of their heads, which could be blonde,[15] brown,[2] gray,[7] or white[4] in color. Abednedo hadarms that terminated in five digits, and legs that ended in three.[11] At least one Abednedo, thescavenger"Crusher" Roodown, was significantly larger than all other known Abednedo.[16]

A gregarious and clever species, the Abednedos' curiosity and acceptance of other species, as well as their skill with languages, made them a common sight in the galaxy. Abednedos evolved from an undergroundprecursor species. They carved out a series of interconnected tunnel-dens, or warrens, to create massive cathedrals, which housed tens of thousands of family units.[11]

At some point, the precursor species evolved into the Abednedo, and they began to start living on the surface of their planet. There, they built multiplecities, spanning the surface of Abednedo. The cities were endless sources of amusement and interest for Abednedos, but in contrast, could strike outsiders as chaotic, due to them including many ornamental spires, flagpoles, and riotously colored carvings.[11]

Shortly after theBattle of Endor,[11] due to their allegiance to theAlliance to Restore the Republic,[18] theEmpire occupied Abednedo, and the planet wassubject to aclimate disruption array.[11] As such, they later elected to become part of the New Republic.[18] After theResistance was formed byGeneralLeia Organa, the Abednedo were early supporters of Organa, and eventually several Abednedo joined the Resistance.[19]

Behind the scenes[]

"This character here is an animatronic character, so he can blink, his eyes can move, he can sniff his nose. Obviously it is worn by a performer and his head's inside."
―Creature Effects Supervisor Neal Scanlan describes Ello Asty's animatronic mask in the "Crafting Creatures" featurette[2]

The Abednedo species were created by creature concept designerJake Lunt Davies for the2015 filmStar Wars: Episode VIIThe Force Awakens, and first appeared in theJourney to Star Wars: The Force Awakens prelude series.[1] Five Abednedos appeared in the film, being Ilco Munica, "Crusher" Roodown, Ello Asty, Brasmon Kee[4] and C'ai Threnalli.[23] All characters were played by actors in costumes and animatronic masks, apart from Roodown, who was not animatronic. Ello Asty was performed byPaul Kasey[24] and voiced byMatthew Wood.[25] Asty's costume was also used for C'ai Threnalli.[26] Crusher Roodown was portrayed byIan Whyte.[27] Ilco Munica was voiced byDee Bradley Baker.[25]

During the production ofThe Force Awakens, Ello Asty was named as a reference to the albumHello Nasty by the hip hop groupBeastie Boys.[28] The director of the film,J.J. Abrams, is a fan of the band, and said that the name was a suggestion from the creature department. The name was approved by him, due to the Beastie Boys reference, having previously featured their song "Sabotage" inStar Trek and "Body Movin'" inStar Trek Into Darkness. In addition, it served as a phonetic reference to his television showLost.[29]

Taking note of this,LucasfilmStory Group member and author of theStar Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary,Pablo Hidalgo, named all other Abednedo that appear inThe Visual Dictionary as references to the Beastie Boys: Roodown is likely a reference to the song "Root Down," Munica's to the albumIll Communication, and Brasmon Kee to the song "Brass Monkey."[30] The trend was later adopted by other authors. In theMarvel Comics seriesStar Wars: Poe Dameron, Sowa Chuan and Oddy Muva are likely named after the songsSo What'cha Want andBody Movin', respectively.[14][15] InChuck Wendig'sAftermath: Empire's End, Awls Ooteek evokes the albumPaul's Boutique.[13] InStar Wars: The Last Jedi, Slowen Lo, portrayed vocally byJoseph Gordon-Levitt, is yet another reference to the Beastie Boys, this time to their songSlow And Low from the albumLicensed to Ill.[31] Finally, in "Teach / Corrupt," the sixth episode ofStar Wars: The Acolyte, SenatorIsedwa Chuwant also refers to a phrase in the Beastie Boys song,So What'cha Want.[32]

The name Abednedo itself is a reference to the song "Shadrach" fromPaul's Boutique, which at a certain point namedrops the Biblical character Abednego.[33]

  28. Instagram-Logo Glyn Dillon (@glyn__dillon) onInstagram (post onSeptember 29,2017):"Back on The Force Awakens I came up with the decals for the rebel helmets (which is why my two boys are on Poe's helmet). JJ had asked me what it said when I was trying to sneak it under the radar, and when I told him it was my boy's names he kindly gave his blessing. Because of this I thought it'd be nice to sneak some Beastie Boys references on one, because of JJ's fondness for getting their songs in his films. So when it came to doing the helmets for the creatures, I thought it'd be nice to do some Aurebesh in a calligraphic way, as if they'd scrawled on their helmets like the young G.I.s and Huey pilots in Vietnam. So on the custom made helmet of this big guy, we did BORN TO ILL on one side and HELLO NASTY on the other (both Beastie Boys albums)... (and of course 'Born to ill' is like the famous Full Metal Jacket BORN TO KILL helmet). Then I forgot all about it... some time later I heard that the CFX dept were referring to this creature as 'Ello Asty' and I realised that the H and the N had been rubbed off in the breakdown process. Tim Shanahan and his team do the most amazing work. They can make everything look as old and lived in as you like, using lots of clever tricks, artistry and good old fashioned elbow grease (as well as real grease). It's one of my favourite depts because really they're the last process on the production line, they're the icing on the cake. And it was in that magic breakdown process that the H and N were lost... and Ello Asty was christened."(backup link)
