Plot summary[]

A small patrol ofT-65 X-wing starfighters fromRogue Squadron, led byWedge Antilles encounter the still-deadly remains of the downedflagshipExecutor. After losing one of theirpilots, the surviving pair come to terms with the loss and Antilles writes the letter to the dead pilot's next of kin.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia includes individual entries for the characters ofKirst andWister, which serves to endorse thecanonicity of thisTales story.

Nevertheless, the story is stated to take place three days after the Battle of Endor, in which Wedge Antilles, in command of Rogue Squadron, and Luke Skywalker are still stationed with the Alliance Fleet in orbit above Endor. This time frame is in direct contradiction with the events taking place in the novelThe Truce at Bakura, in which Skywalker, Antilles, and Rogue Squadron depart from Endor two days after the battle there to assist Imperial forces on the planetBakura. The novel reveals that it would take "days" to travel from Endor to Bakura; thus, it stands that Skywalker, Antilles, and Rogue Squadron are in hyperspace transit three days after the Battle of Endor.
