The 3PO-series protocol droid,[17] also known as the 3PO-series protocol unit,[18] was aclass three droid[4] manufactured byCybot Galactica.[1] Stood at 1.7meters tall[5] and equipped with aTranLang III communications module, theprotocol droid model was fluent in over 6 million forms ofcommunication.[10] The 3PO-series was programmed to understandhuman beings[11] as per its "human-cyborg relations" duties.[2]

TheTC-series protocol droid was a predecessor to the 3PO-series,[19] and had a similar appearance. Constructed by a youngAnakin Skywalker from spare parts in thecity ofMos Espa on theplanetTatooine,C-3PO was a 3PO-series droid.[3] in32 BBY.[20] 3PO-series protocol units operating for theSenate of theGalactic Republic hadyellowphotoreceptors and bore blue-colored plating with white accents, echoing the color scheme of theSenate Guard'sarmor.[21] The droid could be purchased from the manufacturer, but a consumer could buy a kit to build it themselves.[22]

History[]

The 3PO-series droid C-3PO met a predecessor to his line, an Autonomous Translator Module, during the Imperial Era but found the unit to be very rude.

3PO-series droids were a modern model of protocol droid that succeeded the likes of the ancientAutonomous Translator Module, Mark II.[23] Despite being used as a protocol droid,[24] the talky lacked the diplomacy modules seen in later protocol droids. While he knew the talky to be a predecessor to his own model, 3PO unitC-3PO regarded the talky as an inelegant, blocky design. Indeed, by the time of the 3PO-series, droid design had been streamlined instead of remaining like that of the talky.[23] TheTC-series protocol droid was also a predecessor to the 3PO model.[19]

3PO droids in theSenate Office Building of thecapital planetCoruscant served asaides, carrying drinks forsenators,[25] including theSupreme Chancellor.[21] During theClone Wars'Senate hostage crisis, one such droid occupied the Office Building'spower control room, which was the operations center for not only power to the main structure itself, but also theSenate Building. This crucial waypoint for power supply was targeted by a group ofbounty hunters led by the infamousCad Bane. One of the group'sIG-86 sentinel droid unit,HELIOS-3E, shot the Senatorial protocol droid as they stormed the control room.[26]

A Senatorial protocol droid trailed after SenatorDantum Roohd aboardDuchessSatine Kryze'sstarship, theCoronet, as it ferried a delegation led by Kryze from the world ofMandalore to Coruscant.[27] At another point, a blue-white model followed SenatorMee Deechi through the corridors of the Senate Office Building.[25] During a meeting with SenatorPadmé Amidala about theConfederate–Republic peace initiative, Supreme ChancellorPalpatine was supplied a beverage by a Senatorial protocol droid at theChancellor's Suite.JediAhsoka Tano andVice ChairMas Amedda were also present, although none consumed the drinks offered.[21]
