TheBattle of Hoth was a majornavalbattle that occurred in3665 BBY, during the seconddecade of theGreat Galactic War between theGalactic Republic and theresurgent Sith Empire. Afleet of highly advanced prototypewarships, including the RepublicsuperdreadnaughtStar of Coruscant, was ambushed by theImperial Navy afterChissagents alertedImperial Intelligence to thefleet's existence, and theHoth system became the site of a massivespace battle that lasted fordays. While the battle began along the supposedlysecret route that the Republic fleet was traveling, the conflict passed through severalstar systems before reaching its peak above theplanetHoth. The final stages of the battle in the Hoth system destroyed over seventy-fivevessels, inflicting heavy damage on both the Imperial and Republic Navies and sending ships such as theStar of Coruscant, theConraddas Vindicator, theVehement Sword, and theAmbria's Fury crashing to theicy surface of Hoth.
The Battle of Hoth severely demoralized theRepublic Military, breaking the momentum generated by therecent victory atAlderaan and leading to the Republic's eventual acceptance of theTreaty of Coruscant, which ended the war in3653 BBY. Over fifteenyears after the battle, the wreckage of the destroyed ships turned the planet's icy surface into a hotly contestedbattleground.
