Subaru Park – stadium description

Construction of the stadium began in December 2008, when it was certain that Philadelphia will get an MLS franchise. The ground wasn’t built in Philadelphia itself, but in Chester, on the south-western outskirts.

Despite relatively simple design based on steel prefabs, the stadium wasn’t delivered on time, forcing Union to debut in MLs at Lincoln Financial Field and only moving to their new home in June 2010. However, after the move ticket demand quickly outgrew the earlier estimations and made Union consider expansion as early as 2014. The revamp may be done in phases, raising capacity to 20,000, 27,000 and 30,000, eventually.

Though initially designed as fully covered stadium, it was later rethought and done in a more simple and flexible way, accommodating vocal supporters at a remote 2,000-capaity section in the south, with a separate entrance. Decorated with brick and stone finish, the stadium also offers 30 skyboxes for corporate clients and has a concert stage incorporated.

Naming rights were bought by PPL for 11 years in a deal worth $20 million. During the contract PPL ceded the naming to Talen Energy, a dependent company. Then, in 2021, naming was taken up by Subaru.
