Sinhala and Hindu New Year, one of the most celebrated festivals in Sri Lanka, symbolizes prosperity and ethnic harmony, bringing joy and renewal to both the Sinhala and Tamil populations. The festival marks the journey of the Sun from Meena to Mesha (from Pisces to Aries) in the Zodiac, heralding the dawn of a new year for Sri Lankans according to the Sinhala calendar.
Though celebrated primarily on the 13th and 14th of April, the New Year vibes spread across the island starting from the beginning of the month. The festivities include a variety of traditional games, where both children and adults actively participate in this joyous celebration. The festivals continue throughout the month, reinforcing the spirit of unity and togetherness as people from all walks of life come together to cherish this special period of the year.
