The purpose of this webservice is to provide images, basic data and links to further information for all Milky Way Globular Clusters, as far as available.Similar info is provided for former globular cluster candidates. For each object, we give positional data (Right Ascension [RA] and Declination [Dec] for epoch J2000.0 as well as the constellation), distance from the Sun and the Galactic Center in thousands of light years (kilo light years, kly), apparent diameter (in arc minutes) and apparent visual brightness (in magnitudes) as well as radial velocity, linear diameter and absolute brightness.Standard links include ourMessierandNGC online catalogs,an image from theSTScI Digitized Sky Survey (DSS), theSIMBAD Astronomical Database and Marco Castellani'sGalactic Globular Cluster database(GGC-DB).
Note: This list includes a number of globular cluster which probably have only recently been incorporated in, or have immigrated into, our Galaxy's halo; notably from smaller galaxies which are in process to be disrupted and eventually incorparated into the Milky Way: The genuine members of theSagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG) (discovered 1994) includeM 54,Arp 2,Terzan 7 andTerzan 8, as well as probablyNGC 5634 andWhiting 1 and perhapsPalomar 12,NGC 5053,Palomar 2, andNGC 4147. Those probably originating from theCanis Major Dwarf (discovered 2003) includeM 79,NGC 1851,NGC 2298, andNGC 2808. Discounting all these could decrease the number of known genuine Milky Way globulars by up to 14, i.e., from 157 to down to 143.
