UEFA Super Cup- Part Four (Anderlecht vs. Bayern Munich, 1976)

Thefourth edition of the UEFA Super Cup took place in the Fall of 1976. Just likethe previous year West Germany’s Bayern Munich as the winners of the ChampionsCup were present. This time they had to face Belgian side Anderlecht.

BayernMunich led by skipper Franz Beckenbauer had just won their third straightChampions Cup after defeating French side AS Saint Etienne (1-0) at Glasgow onMay 12th, 1976.
Thesquad still contained the likes of Sepp Maier and Gerd Muller, but now alsoincluded rising International Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

TheBelgians of Anderlecht managed by Raymond Goethals were a talented side thatincluded many Belgian Internationals and also a large contingent of Dutchplayers such as Arie Haan and Rensenbrink.
Theyhad defeated England’s West Ham United (4-2) in the Final of the Cup WinnersCup on May 5th, 1976.
Itwas hard to determine a clear favorite, though Bayern Munich had in retrospectpeaked while Anderlecht were younger and hungrier.

Thefirst leg was played on August 17th, 1976 at Munich’sOlympiastadion.
Inthe first half, Bayern failed to exert their authority and most of theircombinations did not work.
Anderlechttook the lead through Arie Haan in the 16th minute.
However, after the break Bayern picked up the tempo with Beckenbauer in commanding form.
Bayerntied the match through Gerd Muller in the 58th minute. Afterwards, they piled on the pressure and were rewarded just before the end from thedependable Muller to win the match with a slim lead (2-1).

The Second Leg took place at Brussels’Parc Astrid on August 30th, 1976.
Bayern Munich and only had a one goallead and the previous year’s loss at Kiev had exposed that they were very muchfor the taking on away soil.
Dettmar Cramer decided to start withSwedish defenderBjorn Andersson, replacing Rainer Kunkel fromthe first leg.
In the 20thminute, Anderlecht took the lead after Rensenbrink headed in a free kick takenbyErwin Vander Daele.
Five minuteslater, Anderlecht doubled its lead. Rensenbrink sent a ball into the box thatinitially Sepp Maier appeared to have covered. However, it got past him andFrançois Van der Elst took advantage to score.
Anderlechtscored the third after the break. In the 59th minute, from the leftside Resenebrink sent Haan through to score. Bayern players protested for anoffside decision but the goal stood.
Bayernpulled a goal back just minutes later in the 63rd minute. From theright side, Jupp Kappelmann sent a ball into the boxand Gerd Muller pounced on it.
Anderlecht put the series beyond any doubt by scoring their fourthin the 82nd minute. Arie Haan sent a long cross into the box forRensenbrink to score his personal second.
Anderlecht had deservedly won their first Super Cup and Bayernwere empty handed for the second year running.

Bayern Munich’sglorious era under Beckenbauer was effectively over and the team stagnated forsome time. He would leave Bayern in a year’s time joining NASL’s New YorkCosmos and others such as Muller would also eventually depart as well.
Anderlecht wouldhave a glorious era of its own in the Cup Winners Cup and reach three straightfinals (1976, 1977, 1978) and winning two (1976, 1978).
