(1957- ) UK actor and author, known for his versatility and wit, perhaps most widely famous for the role of Jeeves in the television series of P GWodehouse'sJeeves and Wooster (1990-1993) and more recently as a popular pundit on the social network Twitter. Of his several novels,Making History (1996), a complexTime Travel tale whose outcome is anAlternate History, is sf; it received aSidewise Award. An attempt to sterilize Hitler's parents before his conception backfires – though Hitler himself does not exist,World War Two ends all the same in a kind ofHitler Wins world,Dystopian and stifling. The plot – whose protagonist hopes to change history back again in order to get his love back, even though the new history of the world has no Holocaust (seeHolocaust Fiction) – unpacks some clearly devastating implications. The Stars' Tennis Balls (2000; vtRevenge2002) is an essentially nonfantastic recasting of AlexandreDumas'sThe Count of Monte Cristo (1844-1845); some of the vengeful protagonist's manipulations of theInternet are perhaps speculative.
