The order Cephalaspidea, head shield slugs, isdistinguished by the presence of a flattened cephalic shield, presumably evolved for burrowing. The shell may be well developed, reduced, internal, or absent. Most are burrowers and nocturnal. Some can swim by flapping their enlarged parapodia. Many, such asBulla spp., are herbivores but someare carnivores specializing in a variety of taxa including othercephalaspideans. About 14 families are found in Hawaii. The order of the families in the following list doesn't necessarily reflect their relationships.
