One of the most popular mainstream singers of the 1970s, Helen Reddy transcended simple stardom with her 1972 signature song “I Am Woman,” which became an iconic expression of the women’s liberation movement.
Born into a prominent Australian show-business family, Reddy began performing when she was 4. After moving to the U.S. and settling in Los Angeles, she was signed by Capitol Records. The Grammy-winning “I Am Woman” was the first of three No. 1 records (“Delta Dawn” and “Angie Baby” were the others), and her recording success led to a summer variety TV show in 1973 as well as several guest appearances as a singer and an actress.
Her films include “Pete’s Dragon” and “Airport ’75,” and she performed on stage in such musicals as “Shirley Valentine” and “Blood Brothers.”
Reddy, who has Addison’s disease, retired from performing in 2002 and became a clinical hypnotherapist and motivational speaker in Sydney, Australia.

”— Thom Kelley, July 27, 2015 at 11:01 p.m.“Having been a fan growing up, I first met Helen in May, 1983 in Dallas TX at Granny's Dinner Playhouse. She was my first concert in 1976 at SMU's McFalin Auditorium in Dallas. She appeared a year later at the same dinner theatre for 10 show in 1 week. I managed to purchase 4 show tickets & the manager allowed me to come see EVERY amazing show. I followed her to two shows on East coast in 1984. One at a casino in a Newark NJ casino & another in Dowingtown PA. I was also able to see her in Blood Brothers on Broadway. She took over the role from Petula Clark or Carole King. She is one hell of an entertainer & I have enjoyed every single piece of work she has done! She sure does deserve the star on the Walk of Fame!!
