Alan Curtis was born Harry Ueberroth in Chicago and started his career as a commercial artist's model.

He began appearing in films in the late 1930s and got his break playing a sailor in "Winterset" and went on to appear in more than 50 films. Memorable films include "Between Two Women," "Bad Guy," "Mannequin," and "Yellow Jack."

Curtis is probably best known as one of the romantic leads in Abbott and Costello's first hit movie, "Buck Privates."

He was married three times; his wives included actresses Priscilla Lawson and Ilona Massey.

During World War II, Curtis served in the Coast Guard.

He died from complications during an operation in New York City; he was 43.
