2016 Toyota Vios price, specs revealed – Dual VVT-i, CVT, standard VSC, RM76,500 to RM96,400

InCars,Local News,Toyota /by /

highlights-trd-1

Official distributor UMW Toyota Motor has revealed full specifications, equipment and pricing of the new2016 Toyota Vios on its website and opened the order books.

The popular B-segment sedan – now with Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) certification – looks mostly identical inside and out, but receives a few key features under the skin.

Prices are actually cheaper this time around – the base 1.5J variant retails atRM76,500 for the manual variant andRM79,800 for the automatic. From here onwards it’s auto only (as before), with the E model being priced atRM83,900, the G atRM89,800 and the range-topping TRD Sportivo atRM96,400. All prices are on-the-road inclusive of insurance and a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

highlights-trd-2

On the whole, the new Vios is between RM1,480 and RM3,680 more affordable than before, although it has to be noted that the older prices have been subjected to arange-wide price increase at the beginning of the year. New to the range is the 1.5GX variant that slots above the G, priced atRM92,800.

All models are powered by a new 2NR-FE 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i four-cylinder engine, meaning that it has variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves. Outputs are actually down on the previous 1NZ-FE VVT-i mill, at 107 PS at 6,000 rpm (-2 PS) and 140 Nm (-1 Nm) at 4,200 rpm.

However, the new engine should provide improved fuel economy, especially now that the old four-speed automatic gearbox has been banished in favour of a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a seven-speed stepped-ratio mode. The five-speed manual gearbox option has been retained on the 1.5J.

Kit count remains largely identical, with halogen reflector headlights, LED daytime running lights, door visors, 15-inch alloy wheels and rear fog lights coming as standard on the outside.

Inside, the base model gets keyless entry, push button start, a 2-DIN head unit with Bluetooth connectivity, four-speakers and front footwell illumination.

The E variant adds front fog lights, power-folding wing mirrors with integrated indicators, a 60:40 split-folding rear seat and a rear armrest with cupholders. A DVD-AVX infotainment system with a 6.8-inch touchscreen and a reverse camera is new for 2016.

The new Vios 1.5GX variant

Moving up, the G variant piles on projector headlights, an acoustic windscreen, chrome-plated grille and rear number plate garnish, black leather upholstery, a multi-info display, a multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel and six speakers. Added for 2016 is a Toyota Premium Security and Solar Film tint, which used to be cost option on all but the top TRD Sportivo.

The new GX model gets a new bodykit, smoked projector headlights, a dark chrome grille, two-tone wheels and black-and-tan combination leather seats. Finally, the TRD Sportivo now receives a new bodykit and wheels – distinct from the ones offered on the GX – as well as black exterior trim. Black leather seats with red stitching also feature inside, along with sportier instrument cluster graphics.

Safety-wise, airbag count stays at two, but the big news is the inclusion of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and traction control as standard on all variants. As before, ABS with EBD and brake assist come as standard, as do ISOFIX rear child seat anchors.

As usual, the Vios comes with a host of options, including the DVD-AVX system with reverse camera on the J variants (RM3,169), the DVD-AVN navigation system with a seven-inch capacitive touchscreen (RM2,109) and an upgrade to the DVD-AVN system for models with DVD-AVX (RM2,014).

Also offered is the GX’s aerokit (RM2,332) and a choice of either Toyota Essential Solar Film (RM1,166) or Premium Security and Solar Film (RM2,109) tints on the J and E variants. A Digital Video Recorder (i.e. dashcam) costs an additional RM636.

Lastly, the colour palette has been expanded to include new Crimson Spark Red Metallic, Super White II and White Pearl CS (the latter is for the TRD Sportivo only), joining the existing Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metalic and Attitude Black Mica.

Comments

  • AI-generated Summary ✨

Comments generally express approval for the new Toyota Vios, highlighting the inclusion of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) on all variants as a significant safety upgrade, and noting improved features like Dual VVT-i and CVT. Many appreciate the competitive pricing, though some find it still pricey compared to rivals like Honda City and Mazda 3. Critics raise concerns about the limited number of airbags, engine power reductions, and the continued use of older technology such as the 4-speed automatic transmission. Others compare the Vios unfavorably with Proton models, classic Japanese brands, or second-hand European cars, citing build quality and value. Overall, sentiments are mixed—recognizing improvements and safety features, but with some disappointment over the price, safety options, and perceived value for money.

Our Government is a donkey government. There are no proper EEV guidelines. Now, everybody also hantam the word EEV and say their car EEV.

The donkeys at MAI, what are they doing? This is their job but instead of doing their job, they are travelling all over the world in Business Class in huge rombongans and staying in 5 star hotels to learn about cars.

Anyway, UMW, being gomen, is greedy. If got EEV, prices should be RM50k. You say your car EEV but prices are the same. Where got meaning?

This is an obvious fact, our Government themselves trying to perah the rakyat and cheat the rakyat. Remember, UMW is fully gomen.

          Thumb up0 Thumb down7
          • You seem to forget that price went up earlier this year by over 3k across the range and no EEV status then. Right now they achieved EEV status and drop the price back to its original pricing before price hike so its obvious UMW will keep the EEV profits for themselves. Think before you comment!

I have seen ppl achieved 1000km (fully highway) on 1 full (55liter) tank with previous jetta, so I believe this new engine should be a bit more efficient. The lowest spec Vios(A) is 80k & the lowest Civic spec is 110k. Your “a little more” is 30k.

Nothing personal here. We are just talking facts. However, I agree with U that the 6 airbags are important if U can afford the difference.

That is why they have A/B/C/D segment cars I guess. Cheers bro & enjoy whatever U are driving bcos I’m enjoying mine. Don’t take it personal.

Hi Tokmoh, how’s ur Iriz? I am the guy who insisted of getting a manual when gf wanna purchase the Iriz, remember?

Apart from a pop-up rubber seal on the dashboarad and sometimes “hilang” radio transmission (which can be easily rectified at SC) , I am very very satisfied with our manual, stabdard 1.3 Iriz. Used to be a staunch anti-Proton, now enjoying evey minute behind my gf wheel. Iriz is indeed short of a good gearbox (and some minor QC issue) to be a Myvi beater.

I test driven the Persona recently. I am very surprised that the dreadful, noisy jerking characteristics of the Iriz CVT are not found on the Persona! Damn, the throttle respond feels very “Japanese like” , very light, and almost like driving the Myvi! So guess the culprit it’s not the hardware after all, it is Proton who got it wrong of writing the TCU parameters for that Punch CVT, which causes this CVT so shitty to drive all these while.

There are many cases that mimic such scenerio, take Gretag’s 6DCT250 for example, the same hardware setup behaves almost like two different gearbox in a Clio and in a Fiesta. And the same can be say Toyota ancient 4AT is much much more refine that Honda’s 5AT. Sometimes, transmission tuning is more important than hardware per se. And I think no one does it better than Aisin and Toyota in the whole world. I think Proton has finally learn its secret of transmission tuning after the mess up seen in the Preve, Suprima, Exora, Saga FLX and Iriz. The improvement of that Punch CVT in the Persona is nothing short of revelation.

And speaking about transmission tuning, that’s one of the trickiest part of car engineering, and not many car manufacturers are willing to share. Is just like everybody can fry a plate of Hokken mee based on the recipe, but only the best chef who understand the secret behind actually knows how to control the “fire” and dish out the best tasting Hokkien mee.

I am very happy Proton has finally done it, and this Punch CVT is not bad after all (I blame not the hardware, but how Proton is incompetent of writing a good software for it all these while). Hopfully, such enhancenent could be rectified on the Iriz in the future. Cheers.

Seriously, this one is kinda suprise even for realist like me as effectively would put Toyota as the 3rd manufacturer to offer ESC/VSC as standard on a B-segment after Ford’s and Kia’s offering, and this is the same UMW-Toyota that won’t fit these system to their above-RM150k range of cars.

But since playing ignorance in the comment section is a big thing these days, I’ll shall retract my statement and conclude that this Vios is an overpriced piece of jepunis sHieet 2016 still offer 4-speed auto ancient engin and no VsC, Proton/Kia/Mercedes is godcar better buy

      • Still lacking behind most of its rivals. The base spec J(which looks like the most popular spec on the Vios) however, seems to be a steal considering you can upgrade to fancies DVD-AVN or more system. As the price climbs, the value drops and the top spec TRD-Sportivo pales when compared to the Vento, City and 2.

        Thumb up4 Thumb down0
        • I do feel that UMWT has always focused on the low base models to fight for volume. With the current pricing it looks like they are set to dominate that segment. Great package with the VSC even in the 78k model. Now thats a first.

The top 2 models should have 6 airbags as standard and I guess UMW isn’t making as much in order for them to drop the prices of their top selling model. I can’t remember when was the last time they actually drop prices unless is an event going on.

    Thumb up19 Thumb down32
    • Keli gen wasnt as popular as dugong gen, so toyota went to panic mode and came to PT for understandings why not popular. After their efforts to send in their zombie trooper salesmen failed to turn pipu perception that toyota = unsafe junks, they finally gave up and now gip ESC for all variants. Still no 6 airbags for topkek spec, but our efforts have not been in vain.

    Thumb up6 Thumb down0

  • Lets buy a Proton Persona and Proton Saga: RM46k+RM46k=RM92k. One for papa, one for mama, instead of only one dinosaur age tech T badge toyota. Furthermore, Persona come with 3 years free maintenance labour+parts.

    Thumb up35 Thumb down14
    • To be fair can’t blame Toyota because the tax are like over 20k. If u got High salary and too much money go buy lah because the maintainance later also 30% higher. As me the poor guy I’m buying proton lah since specs not losing much but the price are huge fraction differences. A fresh graduate guy who need a Toyota to tackle the girls need to spend 7 years left few hundred monthly. Rich outside or poor inside u choose lah..

      Thumb up1 Thumb down2
      • 3 years free labour+parts still 30% higher than Vios? So if you service your Vios, Toyota gave you RM30-RM75 cash per visit? Where did you learn Math?

    pros:

looks as good as honda civic
acceleration on par with mazda 3
cheaper than both mazda 3 and honda civic even performance is similar
cabin space as good as honda civic

    cons:

Handling Idk larh, but the new civic is pretty impressive. Mazda 3 a lot of ppl praise.
And you got to be kidding, you’re attracted to Vios’ cheap catfish LED DRL. Honda Civic much better you get LED DRL & LED headlights(although only on top spec). Not forgetting Mazda had very stylish LED DRL integrated into the headlights.

Looking at ur comment again, can’t help to laugh at ur “Vios accelareation on par with Mazda 3 ” statement. Bro, u got ur head check or not? You are taking a 1.5 sub 110hp vs a direct injected NA 2.0 that puts out 160+hp, how the hell do you come to that conclusion?

Whether on straight roads or twisty turns, the Mazda 3 can MURDER, I repeat, MURDER the Vios. The Vios is one of the worst handling car that I’ve ever driven, it appeals on comfort city drive and nothing else. The Mazda 3 on the other hand, has the best of dynamics among any C-segment car could offer in Malaysia minus the German premium big three. The only worthy rival of the Mazda 3 (exclude the German big three) is the Ford Focus. Vios? Nah! What a joke!

Seriously, I wonder if you have driven very limited cars in yout life time? You having a broken back that can’t feel the car chassis while driving? or you’re a Toyota SA?

This will pave the way for a revolution for LED headlamp to be included or at least as an option for the top specked models in B-segment cars.

I thought this day would never come. ESC as standard on every new Vios ? Am I dreaming ? I guess UMWT finally realised that they need to improve safety specs to stay relevant. Yeah sure, only 2 airbags across the range, but one step at a time I guess… just to note, ESC is not standard on the Honda City, but the highest V spec has 6 airbags.

I’m a reasonable person, when someone does something good, I give them dua tangan thumbs up… even if that someone is ‘evil’ UMWT. So yes, good move UMWT, and glad you guys finally came to your senses and listened to customer feedback. We shall see if the new Vios can help Toyota regain their title of no.1 best-selling foreign badge in Malaysia for 2017.

    Thumb up39 Thumb down2
    • Fully agreed. Even though the top spec do not get 6 air bags, Vois is now a better equipped car. If the price can be lowered further then it would definitely help UMWT to gain back its lost ground.

    • Toyota sold more than 300k cars last year of which close to 100k were toyota cars, close to 200k were perodua cars (which are licensed by daihatsu, a subsidiary of toyota motor) while the rest are made up of Lexus cars.

That is more than 50% Malaysia TIV. Nah, UMW not interested in being no 1.

Toyota rectifies all that with product update,VSC,price down. Complain some more.

No fan of Toyota but they seems to be coming into sense with the launch of Sienta and now this Vios. Finally safety is a priority. City offers 6 bags only for the high 92k variant. Their volume seller are still the lower variants. About time we have rationale discussions here.

UMW finally listened to customers with this latest update. Looking forward to more from others. Buyers will benefit the most

  • A piece of friendly advice to young car buyers:

I know everyone thinks that City/Vios is your first car. If you want cheaper option, then you’ll drive a Myvi/Axia/whatever.

In any case – RM50k is gonna cost you around RM700/month, 80k is almost RM1000/mth.

Look in the 2nd-hand car market and get a car for around 30-40k, at least you’ll pay RM500, with some basic maintenance.

The Malaysian car market is weird and skewed when people think spending one year’s salary on a car is normal.

On the Vios – I’m bored to death about it so no comments.

For B-segment sedan (non-national makes), there’s only 2 models that still offer manual (at least baseline spec) is Toyota Vios and Nissan Almera despite recording a very dismal figure (roughly less than 5% for passenger cars) for new car sales (too many unqualified f*#k*rs that simply jammed up the road that badly need to be taken off from road at any cost).

Between Almera and Vios (both manual), good thing for Vios is there’s an inhibitor feature where clutch pedal MUST depressed fully before the engine can be started (either crank or push button start) while for Almera, car engine can be start normally which can be very dangerous to others if even one step was skipped (proper step is make sure gear in neutral, depress clutch pedal, start and then release clutch pedal)

  • I am till now has been boycotting Toyota for its unsafe cars, milking on RELIABILITY and RESALE VALUE to sell in huge numbers, at the expense of the buyers’ life (and other road users’ life too). But, I guess, it’s time to FORGIVE.

But I have to agree on some comments here saying that Proton has caused these carmarkers to introduce ESC for Malaysian markets. I myself never heard of “E.S.C” when it comes to car, until Proton Iriz was introduced.

Now, UMW. When will your ALTIS be equipped with ESC as standard across variant? My eyes are on it now.
