Iraq Unrest Unabated: At least 38 Killed, 109 Wounded

After three days of unrest in the north, bomb attacks inBaghdad took center stage. At least38 Iraqis were killed and 109 more werewounded in those and other attacks across the country. However, becauseseveral locations did not provide any figures, the true tally could be muchhigher.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of protesters came out afterFriday prayers in Anbar province to continue their weeklydemonstrationsagainst the Shi’ite-led government. The U.N. envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler,called forrestraint on all sides, but Sunni clericsencourageda continuation to anti-government attitudes. The Unified Council of IraqiTribes, however, held an emergency meeting anddenouncedthe violence.

Security forces were allowed back intoSuleiman Bekafter tribal leaders convinced insurgents tohand over thetown.

InBaghdad, attacks mostly targeted Sunnis. A bomboutside a Sunni mosquekilled nine peopleandwounded42 more.Oneperson was killed and six were wounded in a blast inRashidiya a fewminutes later. Bombs outside mosques inShabb lefttwo dead andsixwounded.Sevenpeople were wounded in a bombing inDoura.

A motorcycle at a falafel shop inSadr Citykilledfive and left at least19more were wounded.

A car bombkilledseven people andwoundedat least 13 more at a shopping center.

Soldiers denied executingfivepeople who were brought to a morgue inTuz Khormato.

An I.E.D.killedfour soldiers and wounded a fifth one inMahmoudiya.

Gunmenkilledfive people nearTikrit.

A bomb outside a tailor shop inWadi Hajarwounded12 people.

An I.E.D. inSaidiyawoundedone person.

InFalluja, apolicemanwas shot and wounded. Gunmenwoundeda civilian.Clashestook place.

Clashesbrokeout inHaditha andKubaisa.
