25 YEARS IN FILM
BUSINESS
Mr. H..M. Waterman Has *
Anniversary Today
How An Industry Grew
MR. H. M. Waterman (head of
Ozone .Theatres Limited) today
will celebrate the twenty-fifth anniver
sary of his entry into the motion pic
ture business.
Mr. WatermanHelp
Mr. Waterman
Starting in" a hum
ble way, .Mr. Water
man is now man
aging director of
three - companies
Ozone Theatres,
Ltd., S.A. Theatres,
and Ozone Theatres
(Broken Hill), Ltd.
These companies
control the fol
lowing theatres:
Theatre Royal, Chin
ese Gardens (Ade
laide), Len ard's
Theatre (Broken
Hill),, and; subur
ban and country
theatres at Semaphore, Port Ade
laide, Alberton, - "Prospect, Enfield,
Marryatville, Victor. . Harbor, and
Piric.
Programmes of Earlier Days
- ; \ » . .
When the company was founded in
1911 the means of supplying- enter
tainment were vastly different from
those of the present day. Twenty-five
years ago, he says, two picture pro
grammes only were available each
week for the whole of Australia.
These arrived by mail steamer from
London each Saturday-one pro
gramme consigned to Spencer's Thea
tre, Melbourne, and the other to
West's Cyclorama, Adelaide. The
Adelaide programme was shown at
Ozone Theatre, Port Adelaide, on
tlie following Monday.
The subjects available each took 10
to 15 minutes to screen, being come
dies. dramas, and travelogues; from
England, France, Germany, and Nor
way. Mr. Waterman notes the con
trast today, with eight to 10 pictures
being shown each week in Adelaide.
Each release has to be reviewed by
executive members of the staff before
it is booked to an Ozone theatre.
First 8,000-Ft. Film
Mr. - W aterman remembers the
first full-length film to reach Ade
laide. This was "England's Navy,"
8,000 it. in length. . Its arrival caused
consternation.
How could such a long picture be
included in one programme? The
problem was solved by showing 4,000
ft. one week and 4,000 the next. An
other early full-length production,
"Les Miserables,". was similarly
treated.. - v-': ^
The . first picture shown by the
- company was projected oil the
whitewashed wall of a - stable at
the rear of the Waterman home at
Semaphore.
From that beginning Mr. Waterman
developed Ozone Theatres, the first
of which was at Port Adelaide. Acti
vities later were extended to Sema
phore and Unley town halls.
Alberton and Enfield theatres were
built, and those at Prospect and
Victor Harbor came under his con
trol when National Pictures interests
were absorbed. The old Semaphore
Town . Hall was converted to a mod
ern picture house in 1929, and "in 1933
the company -purchased i Alhambra
Theatre in Pirie, and completely re
modelled it to one of the finest
countrjr theatres in the State.
Faith and Foresight
To grow up with such a widespread
industry does not fall to the lot of
many men. In the early days few
had faith and insight into the
future of the motion picture industry.
But Mr. Waterman had, and he stack
to it tenaciously.
As new ideas and methods of pro
jection and exhibition came along they
were incorporated in his theatres.
Sound on the screen, the most 'revo
lutionary change "the industry has
known, was soon to be heard in all
Ozone theatres.
The wisdom of placing the best
equipment in the various plants was
borne out by the reputation gained,
and the confidence displayed by the
public in the class of entertainment
Mr. Waterman provided.
Mr. Waterman's seven soris--^ .
Messrs. Ewen, Clyde, Donald;
Laurie, Gordon, Keith, and Doug
las-all have executive posts in
the company's theatres.
