Page 3 - Obituary
Mr. C. W. Flint
Mr. Charles Walter Flint, whose
death occurred suddenly at his resi
dece, Penola, on October 4, was a
well-known, grazier and often topped
the wool, prices in the South-East.
Mr. Flint was a life member of the
Penola Racing and Gun Clubs, and a
councillor for many years. He was
the eldest son of the late Benjamin
and Alice Flint, and was born at
North Adelaide 66 years ago. He
came with his parents to Kalangadoo
when a little child, and then to Penola
Station, where his father was man
ager for the late Mr. Thomas Morris
for many years. He received his edu
cation at the Sisters of St. Joseph's
School, Penola, and at the Christian
Brothers' College, Wakefield street,
Adelaide.
Mr. Flint was a prominent. athlete,
winning many foot races in his
younger days, and he was also a fine
horseman and buck-jump rider. He
went to Warrengie Station, Meningie,
taming and schooling horses over hur
dles for the late Mr. Hyde, where he
remained for some time. He was
overseer for the late Mr. W. McPher
son, of Cluny Station, Penola for
many years, and was held in high
esteem. His kind and gentle person
ality endeared him to all.
Mrs. C. Black (Penola) is a daugh
ter. Mrs. H. Harman (Adelaide) and
Mrs. J. H Land (Penola) are sisters;
Mr. H. T. Flint (Viewbank, Penola),
Mr. L W. Flint (Glenroy), and Mr.
A T. Flint (Glenroy) are brothers.
His wife and eldest daughter pre
deceased him. The very largely at
tended funeral showed the high re
gard in which he was held.
Death of Mr. J. B. Mather
Adelaide, November 8.
Mr. John Baxter Mather, of Pros-
pect, who died at his home yesterday
at the age of 87 years, was for many
years associated with printing and
newspaper activities in South Aus-
tralia. He was born at Edinburgh,
and came to Australia at the age of
five with his parents, who settled first
at Portland, Victoria, and went to
Mount Gambier about 1864. He joined
the staff of "The Border Watch," and
later went to Warrnambool and was
associated on the "Warrnambool
Herald" with J. F. Archibald, ot
"Bulletin " fame, In 1890 Mr. Mather
came to Adelaide, and worked as a
compositor and later on the literary
staff of "The Advertiser." Subse-
quently he took up artistic work,
wrote verse, and painted pictures with
excellent appreciation of tones and
good draughtmanship. He started
making chalk plates for " The Adver
tiser," and later established the "Ex
celsior " engraving Arm of Mather
and Hanka, which made the first half
tone blocks for "The Advertiser." He
had no children, and his wife died
many years ago.
Mr. A. H. Mather, of Mount Gam
bier, and Mr. G. R. J. Mather, of
Naracoorte, are brothers.
A few months ago Mr. Mather pre
sented the local Town Council with a
fine example of his work - a red gum
study - and four or five other works
by well-known artists. These pictures
are hung in the local Town Hall.
When "The Border Watch" opened
a branch office in Naracoorte about 60
years ago and founded the Naracoorte
"Herald," Mr. Mather and the late
Mr. Ash, as editor, were sent up by the
firm to conduct the paper. After run-
ning it for a term for Laurie and Wat-
son they purchased it. As Mather and
Ash they ran it for a few years, and
then they became involved in a libel
action with the late Mr. W. Hutchison,
of Morambro. The verdict went
against them, and they were put out
of business.
One thing that Mr. Mather was
proud of was his acquaintance with
Adam Lindsay Gordon. He was a
great admirer of the poet's work, as
well as his horsemanship. As a young
boy he witnessed the Steeplechase
round the town, and was disappointed
when Gordon failed to win the race.
