Brisbane Week by Week
(By Our Special Correspondent.)
'TRACES of Christmas are still lying
about, so perhaps there Is some
excuse for writing of it. To-day was
spent by most employees of the vari
ous stores in clearing up the mess
after the rush, straightening stock,
and discussing various phases of their
holiday. The appearance of the city
was a striking contrast to the bustle
and hurry of Christmas Eve, when city
streets were filled with husre crowds
of late shoppers and merrymakers,
being pactically deserted in compari
son. However, many people are still
on holiday; but there is no doubt that
after a few weeks, when the effects
of sunburn and stiffness have had
time to wear off, the city once again
will buzz with activity.
? ? ? ?
THE HOLIDAY TOLL.
^GAIN the holidays have taken their
toll in accidents. The most serious
mishap occurred near Lakeside on
the road between Southport and
Oxenford, on Thursday night, when
one man was killed and two severely
injured. The three were driving in
a motor truck, which swerved off the
bitumen surface of the road, crashed
into a glidepost on the side of the
into a guardpost on the side of the
men were thrown on to the road, and
the driver was pinned under the truck.

ANOTHER FIRE IN THE CITY.
J)AMAGE to the extent of £30,000 was
caused by a fire which broke out in
a block of 'buildings the property of the
Engineering Supply Company of Aus
tralia, in Edward Street, City, early
on Thursday morning. Portion of the
block is occupied by the company and
a stock of electrical equipment valued
at about £18,000 was practically des
troyed. Jones and Hambly, book
binders, who occupy premises in the
same buildings, escaped with a slight
loss, but more than £3000 damage was
done to the stock of Farleigh Nett
heim and Company, leather, grindery,
and thread merchants.
NEW BROADCASTING STATION.
£JLAIMED to be the most, powerful
'B' class 'broadcasting station in
Queensland, station 4BH will be open
ed shortly. The date has been fteer'
tentatively for January 2. The studio
has been established at Grice's Music
Salon in the city; and the transmitting
s'. lion is at Bald Hills, about ten
miles from the studio. The buildings
at Bald Hills are fireproof; they have
been constructed of complex and flbro
cement. T-he roof is non-metallic.
Transmitting tests have already been
conducted, and the results have prov
ed to be very satisfactory. Mr. Walter
Pym, well-known among Brisbane
theatre goers, who has been associ
ated with Station 4QG for some time,
is to manage the station.

OUR NEW BRIDGE.
|j|?ECULATr'ON is Hfe as tu tho nam-i
^?-wlii'cL ? !i' l-e given to our new
bridge. whHs is at present known to
all and sundry as the Grey Street
Bridge. It has been left for the alder
men of the City Council to determine
a name, and the Lord Mayor has al
ready expressed his choice as being
m favour of calling it Alexandra
Bridge. One enterprising newspaper
correspondent has suggested through
the columns of the daily press here
that the name of Victoria Bridge
should be changed to Queens Bridge
to correspond with Queen Street, and
Grey Street should be changed to
King's Road, and the bridge called
King's Bridge. The suggestion has
merit — but what would Brisbane be
without its Victoria Bridge? Another
suggestion is to name the bridge after
jOxley, the discoverer of the Bris
bane River.
CRICKETING NOTES.
TT seems as though the much dis
cussed question as to the fairness
of Gilbert's bowling has at last been
definitely settled. Gough used him to
open the attack against the South .Aus
tralians, and he was passed without
question by umpires Hele and Jenkins;
though, from all reports, both watched
his action very closely. Hele i* ai'
international umpire, and a re'able
authority on many points of the game.
In view of his decision, this contro
?\ersy should be regarded as closed,
fur though no-balled by a Sheff.e'rl
Shield umpire, he has passed i close
'est by one of our Test umpires. A
feature of this match was the brilliant
innings by Sides, the Townsville coll,
ul'O fully justified the high hones of
his admirers and supporters. His in
nings has been described as one of the
most graceful and vigorous perform
ances seen in Adelaide for a long time.
He was associated with Oxenham in a
cjnlury partnership, scoring 74 before
being bowled by Lee. It is to be hoped
that he maintains his present form.

WANTED— A SEAT.
^PEAKING about the Transport Bill
recently pased by Parliament,
in which provision is made for the ap
pointment of a Transport Advisory
Eoord, the Lord Mayor has emphatic
ally asserted that the City Council
should be represented on such a boaid.
Representations are still to be made
to the Minister with a view to securing
representation. The view is held that
Brisbane, with its big tramway sys
tem, and the responsibility for provid
ing roads for traffic over a large area,
has a reasonable claim for its repre
sentatives to be included in the per
sonnel of- the Board.

THE BRISBANE SEAT.
f\F the seats contested in Queensland
at the recent Federal elections, the
Brisbane seat has a fair claim to have
been the most interesting. After first
one and then the other forging ahead,
Mr. G. Lawson has now obtained what
appears to be a definite lead over Col.
Cameron, the retiring member. With
only about 500 postal votes to come,
I he Labour man has a lead of 714, and
if. appears that Cameron cannot make
up the leeway. Cameron has held the
seat for about 12 years.

THE OPENING OF THE SYDNEY
BRIDGE.
A CCORDING to reports preparations
for the opening of the Sydney
P.ridge are now being taken in hand.
Aerial displays on a scale never before
seen over Sydney are being planned,
and the permission of the Air Board is
tj be sought to allow service 'planes
to salute the bridge. Combined squad
rons of service and civil 'planes will
make a grand flight round the harbour,
and smoke writing aerobatles and other
sAyriding events will be crowded into
the programme.

HAVE YOU HEARD THIS?
'I don't know anything worse than
letting your wife find a letter that you
have forgotten to post,' said one man
nervously, as he turned out his various
pockets.
'Oh, I do,' said the other.
'And what is that?'
'Letting her find one you forgot to
burn.'

THIS WEEK'S GREAT THOUGHT.
' And then there was the wellmean
ing cove who spoke at the wedding
on Friday: 'Until I got married, I
never knew what happiness meant' he
said, 'and then' he added, sadly, 'it
was too darned late.' '
Brisbane, December 28, 1931.
