OBITUARY
MR. JOHN B. MATHER.
Mr. John Baxter Mather, who died
at Prospect, on November 7. 1940, at
the age of 87 years, had been asso-
ciated for many years with the print -
ing industry, more particularly with
newspapers. He was born at Edin-
burgh, and at the age of five came
with his parents to Australia. On
leaving school he entered the office
of "The Portland Guardian," In Vic
toria. In 1864 he joined the staff of
'"The Border Watch" In Mount Gam
bier. Later he returned to Victoria
and joined the "Warrnambool Her
ald," where he was associated with
Mr. J. F. Archibald, so well known
for his connection with the Bulletin.
Leaving Warrnambool he became a
part proprietor of the "Narracoorte
Herald" (S.A.)' with the late Mr. G.
Ash. In 1890 Mr. Mather moved on
to Adelaide and joined the "Adver-
tiser" staff - first as a compositor
and then as a member of the literary
staff, in which latter capacity his art
criticisms evoked much favourable
comment. He also wrote verse and
painted pictures which were the sub
ject of much notice in the artistic
community. Etching chalk slates (the
forerunner of the process plate) for a
time occupied his attention, and then
he established the firm of Mather
and Hanks and devoted his time to
the development of the process en -
graving industry. He retired from
business some years ago, but never
lost interest in literary or artistic
matters. He published several books,
among them being "Under the South-
ern Cross." His host of friends will
regret the closing of a life so rich in
artistic perception, so fruitful in ef-
fort, and so colorful in experience.
Mr. Mather had no children, and
his wife predeceased him. Mr. G. R.
Mather, of Narracoorte, and Mr. A.
H. Mather, of Mount Gambier, are
brothers.
The foregoing is from "Wimble's
Reminder" for January, 1941, brought
under our notice by Mr. E. Barclay,
of Perth, W.A.
