NEW YORK. December 28.
The New York film critics chose
'A Street' Car Named Desire' as
the best motion picture of 1951
and honoured its director, Elia
Kazan, and its leading lady, Viv-
ien Leigh, as the best in their fie
Arthur Kennedy was chosen as
thee best actor for his work in
Universal-International's "Bright
Victory."
Marlon Brando of 'Street Car'
was second.
The critics chose 'The River'
an Independent film made by Ken
neth McEldowney, in India, as
second best.
George Stevens, who made "A
Place in The Sun" for Paramount
was given second place among
directors,'
Sheley Winters, who played in
'A Place In The Sun', was run
ner-up to Miss Leigh.
'Miracle In Milan', an Italian
picture was chosen as the best
foreign-language film.
ALEC GUINNESS BEST
LONDON, December 28.— Alec
Guinness and Anne Neagle were
the biggest box office attractions
in British films in 1951.
They head a poll conducted by
the London Bureau of the 'Motion
Picture Herald' in which 45,424
British exhibitors voted on the
basis of their box office returns.
Guinness has not previously
been in the top 10, but Anna
Neagle held her position there for
the fifth successive year, al-
though she was seen in only one
new film, 'The Ladv With the
Lamp.'
Miss Neagle was also nominat-
ed the leading actress in the in-
ternational field in which Guin-
ness was placed fifth.
