FIRST CLASS FILMS ïîT
THE MAKING
From a London Correspondent
ONE CANNOT HELP being impressed by the films
which are either being made, or will very shortly be
made, in British studios. They all appear to have the
makings of first class pictures. Several have the British
Isles as their background; all are either teamed up with
well-known stars or young promising artists who are
being groomed for early stardom.
TOOKING in at Shepherds Bush
the other day I saw that the
Gainsbrouogh picture, "Jassy," a
technicolour Ulm, produced by
Sydney Box, is well under way.
This stars Margaret Lockwood and
Patricia Roc. The latter ls a busy
person as, figuratively speaking,
she is playing in three Alms at
once. Her other films aro "The
Brothers," based on L. A. G.
Strong's novel; and "So Well
Remembered." I am told that it
ls not unusual for her to finish work
at Shepherds Bush in the evening
and then proceed to Denham to
work on the other pictures until
midnight.
Another Gainsborough picture in
courre of production is "Holiday
Camp." This is an original story
by Godfrey Winn, English journ
nalist, and starring Jack Warner,
who, i am told ,is also appearing
in a leading role in "Dear Mur-
derer." Scenes for "Holiday
Camp" are being shot at Filey,
Yorkshire. I am giving no secrets
away when I say that this is the
famous Butlin Holiday Camp.
. * * .
TNDIVIDUAL Pictures report that
good progress is being made
with Stewart Granger's latest film
"Captain Boycott," which Frank
Launder is directing at Pinewood
This film, which is based on ISM
century Ireland, has in its cast ar
18-year-old Dublin girl, Constance
Smith, claimed to be Hedj
Lamarr's double.
Two Cities tell me they have now
completed tho cast for "Uncle
Silas," based on the classic thrillei
by Sheridan le Fanu. Young Jean
Simmons gets her first starring role
while Derrick De Marney takes the
part of Uncle Silas. Madame
Katina Paxinou, well-known GreeV
actress, ls BISO coming over speci-
ally from Hollywood to play £
leading part.
Nothing has been spared to givi
authenticity to the Boultim
brothers' Two Cities film, "Fame i!
the Spur," which stars Michae
Redgrave and Rosamund John. Th<
scenes In the film depicting th<
suffragett movement were person,
ally approved by 79-year-old Ladi
Pcthick-Lawrence, who hersel
was an active participant in thi
movement
From Cineguild comes news tha
their next production will be basei
on Joseph Shearings nove
'Blanche Fury," and will featur
Valerie Hobson.
By the time these notes appea
Cineguild are likely to have corr
pleted their other produetinr
'Take My Life," a murder mys
tery. Certain of the scenes wer
shot in the Norfolk Fen country
while a replica of a Scottish villng
was actually constructed in th
i studio.
Incidentally, Cineguild are right-
ly proud that their production,
'Brief Encounter," was rated as
the most interesting film in the
recent Cannes Festival
? . . . »
J" HEAR that the Herbert Wilcox
picture, now in full production
at Shepperton studios, has been re-
titled 'The Courtneys of Curzon
St."
Also in full production there ls
"A Man About the House," based
on Francis Brett Young's weli
known novel. This is being pro-
duced under the direction1 of Leslie
Arliss and stars Margaret John-
ston and Dulcie Gray. The cast
also includes Kieron Moore, whom,
i am told, Korda prophesies will
be one of the big names on the
world's screens. Korda has back-
ed his opinion up by giving him a
seven-year contract with London
Films.
There ls a slight change in
Korda's plans with Orson Welles.
I gather that the latter will now
make Oscar Wilde's "Salome."
One of tho latest acquisitions of
London Films has been the taking
over control of the Rialto Cinema
in London's West End.
I also hear that they have placed ;
under contract Eileen Herlie, who
has been a big success in Jean ;
Cocteau's play, "The Eagle Has
Two Heads." i
