Page 1 - AUSTRALIANS SEIZED BOUGAINVILLE IN 1914
AUSTRALIANS SEIZED
BOUGAINVILLE IN 1914
UNDER the Treaty of Versailles, the islands of Buka and
Bougainville, with the Nissan, Mortlock, and Tasman
groups, were surrendered and since 1920 have been admin-
istered bv the Commonwealth under the mandate of the
League of Nations. They are therefore both in Australian
territory.
After the capture of Rabaul by
the Australians in 1914 an expedi-
tion was sent with instructions to
seize the Government station at
Kieta, on Bougainville Island, and
post there a half-company as gar-
rison.
The force under the command
of Lieut.-Colonel Watson arrived
at Kieta on December 9, and the
German district officer went on
board the transport Meklong under
a flag of truce. The terms of the
capitulation were read over to him
and he said he would offer no re-
sistance.
The troops landed and seized tha
Government buildings, the Ger-
man colours were hauled down,
and the British flag was hoisted
and saluted.
Bougainville Island itself is 115
miles long with an average breadth
of 32 miles, and is the largest in
the Solomons group. It consists
of steep, rugged and irregularly
dispersed mountains which rise in
varying heights to 10,200 feet, in
the active volcano of Balbi.
The natives are Melanesian,
those of Buka and Bougainville
being particularly dark-skinned.
