MARE'S
NEST
THIS was the summing-up of
Mr. Eric Aarons in an inter
view last week with the Tri
bune on the sensationalised
story in . the Sun-Herald of
June 22 about the signposts to
a 'Communist Training School.'
"Evidently," said Mr. Aarons, "this
was a stupid provocation — innocent,
or perhaps not so innocent.
"On Friday, June 20, Sun-Herald
reporters came to premises at East
. Minto. In the back of their car was
at least one of the signboards with
which Mr. Daley, Campbelltown Town
Clerk, was photographed.
"Who made and. put up the signs,
and how the Sun-Herald reporters came
to have them in their possession are
the only 'mysteries'," said Mr. Aarons.
Police interview
"On Tuesday, June 24, Detective-
Sergeant Gilchrist and Detective-Con-
;l stable Hole, of Liverpool, and Detective-
Constable Weir, of CIB head office,
interviewed me at East Minto.
"I asked them had their investiga
tions into who put up the signs made
any progress, as I assumed that was
What they were interested in.
"They replied that so far there was
no progress in that respect, but that
they had been directed by their super
iors to also 'find out what was going
on' in the area.
"I said that I had nothing to hide,
and invited questions.
"I .told them that I was manager of
the Bushlovers' Club, which had the
tenancy of the property.
"I said that I was a .Communist and
-flo were many of the members.
"Like most Australians, we had a
love of the bush, and the George's
River was a very beautiful part.
"I told the police officers that mem
bers arid friends came to the premises
to spend' their weekends, holidays or
spare time in these beautiful surround
ings. Bushwalks, swimming in season,
games, music and films were some of
the relaxations
"Naturally, those present often
wished to study and discuss social,
political, cultural and natural science
topics.
"In order to facilitate -this, there
was a fairly extensive library of novels,
history and science books, and works
of Marx, Engels. Lenin and other
Marxist writers
"We thus afforded our members and
friends the opportunity to realise the
aim of a sound mind in a- healthy
body. .
v "It is known that there have been,
and are even yet, those who wish to
prohibit people from reading Marxist
books, biit they cannot . succeed. '
Invitation to police
"Having answered all the questions
asked . by the police officers. I asked
would they, care to look pver the place.
"I was not obliged to do this, nor
were they in a position to request it.
"I invited them to inspect the place
in order to dispel any possible air of
mystery or of anything sinister which
reactionaries or sensatibn-mofigers
might have wished to create.
"They accepted with alacrity, and I
showed them all over. the premises, the
library, and wherever they wanted to
flee.
"They said how impressed they were
with the beauty and suitability of the
location and premises, and after assur
ing me that they were completely satis-
' fied and had.no more questions to ask,
they departed, saying that they, like
myself,, were interested in finding the
originator of the signs.
"About an hour and a half later I
saw them getting into their car in
Campbelltown.
"I asked them if they had inter
viewed Mr. Daley, the Town Clerk, and
made any progress in the mystery of
the signs.
"They told me that Mr. Daley could
throw no light on the matter, and that
he had said that he had certainly not
given the signs to the newspaper re
porters, and did not know who had.
