MISS EVELYN GARDINER.
»
Titian hair Is usually associated with
abundant vitality and energy, and also
with artistic tendencies, and In both these
respects M'ss Evelyn Gardiner, who arrived
in Brisbane yesterday with the Gilbert
and Sullivan Opera Company, is true to
type From beneath the little black hat
which she wore with a floral chiffon frock,
the Titian curls framed a face with a
"peiches and cream" complexion, clearly
Indicating her English birth "Of course,
one has a go at lots of things," said
Miss Gardiner, chatting at Lennon's with
a "Courier ' representative on her experi-
ences during the company's recent season
In New Zealand. "I had no en,d of ex-
periences In New Zealand," she continued,
"salmon fishing, trout fishing, flying,
riding-" But In the course of con-
versation it was learnt that she Is no
novice in horsemanship, having in England
hunted tluee times a week before entering
upon her stage career.
Her fondness for music, pastel drawing,
interior decorating, and furnishing, the
study of pearls and diamonds, In which
she has specialised, and other artistic
hobbles were ascribed by Miss Gardiner
to the fact that she comes of an artistic
family, with the additional Influence of
an education completed in Paris, and the
artistic instinct derived from a French
grandmother. A Londoner by birth, the
present tour is Miss Gardiner's first visit
to Australia, and tiurlng the many months
in which the company has played in the
Southern States and New Zealand she has
learned to love Australia. When ques-
tioned as to her achievements, Miss
Gardiner said that her first appearances
had been with the D'Oyley Carte Gilbert
and Sullivan Company at the Savoy
Theatre, Mr. D'Oyley Carte having made
arrangements for her training as soon as
he had heard her sing. As a contralto
singer and an actress In "straight" parts
-a combination of some rarity-Miss
Gardiner has had opportunities of play-
ing many and varied roles, and after three
years with Gilbert and Sullivan in Lon-
don she appeared principally In drama in
London and the provinces, taking chiefly
the parts usually played by Irene Van
brugh and Marie Lohr. She has also
had considerable experience in the films,
having participated in those made at the
studios at Elstree, London, with Oswald
Stoll's studios at Cricklewood, and she
also. In the South of Franco, appeared
on the silver screen In "The Chinese Bun-
galow," In which Matheson Lang took the
leading role. It was while playing the
leading role in "S.O S." in London that
she received the invitation to make her
present tour of Australia. Replying to
a final question as to her favourite Gilbert
and Sullivan lole, she declared a pre-
ference for the Fairy Queen in "Iolanthe,"
and In that role, as well as in many
others, lovers of the popular comic operas
will have an opportunity of seeing and
hearing her during the season which will
open at His Majesty's Theatre this even-
ing.
