LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
SANDGATE'S NEW MAYOR.
SANDGATE, February 24.
The statutory meeting of the Sandgate Town
Council was held on Thursday evening. The
town clerk (Mr. A. S. Parry) presided. Alder-
man Allen proposed Alderman Bowser as mayor,
and Alderman Hoskins seconded. Alderman Lunn
nominated Alderman Allom, and Alderman
Clarkson seconded. On a vote being taken
Alderman Bowser was elected, and was congratu-
lated by the other aldermen.
A special meeting of the council was held on
Thursday evening to appoint committees and
fix salaries. The council went into committee
to discuss these matters, and on returning to
open council the following were announced :—
Committees: Finance, Aldermen Allom, Lunn,
and Hoskins; Legislative, Aldermen Lunn and
Allom; Improvement, Aldermen Craig, Buchanan,
Hoskins, Allen, and the mayor (Alderman
Bowser; Health, Alderman Lunn, Mason and
Allom; Water, Aldermen Craig, Buchanan, Hos-
kins, Allen, and the mayor; Town Hall, Alder-
men Lunn, Craig, and the mayor; Parks, the
mayor, Aldermen Buchanan and Mason; Light-
ing, Aldermen Craig, Allen, and the mayor;
Allowances and salaries: Mayor's allowance,
£50; town clerk, A. S. Parry, salary increased
by £25 per annum; medical officer, Dr. G.
Davidson, £10, temporary assistant town clerk,
£1 per week (appointment left in mayor's
hands); foreman and ganger held over; acting
health and nuisance inspector and working
gnger ; caretaker, salary 25/ per week (appoint-
ment left in mayor's hands; valuer and remune-
ration, held over; Brighton Park ranger, G.
Buckley, £1 per annum; wages of road ganger
same as at present.
