BIG FIRE AT SANDGATE
TOWN HALL AND HOUSE
DESTROYED.
A MAN INJURED.
A disastrous fire occurred at Sandgate
late last evening, resulting in the destruc-
tion of the Town Hall and a private resi-
dence. The cause of the outbreak is un-
known, but it is stated that it started
underneath the stage at the rear of the
Town Hall. The hall had been engaged
for several Tuesday nights for a series of
cinematograph entertainments, and
one was held last evening. The
show closed about 10 o'clock
and the manager was at his
hotel, when at about 10.45 the alarm of
fire was raised. It was quickly found that
the outbreak was at the Town Hall, and
within a short time there was nothing left
of the fine building but a heap of smoul-
dering ashes. The flames quickly spread
to the cottage next door, which was
owned by Mr. Smith, of Christmas Creek,
near Beaudesert, and occupied by Mr.
Hook, and in a short time this building
was also demolished. Fears were enter-
tained that the whole block of houses
down to the Seaview Hotel would be
burned, but fortunately there was a break
of about five yards between the burned
house, and the next one—the resi-
dence of Mr. W. R. Barfoot—
and after a very anxious time the efforts
of a number of the residents of the town
to prevent the flames spreading to Mr.
Barfoot's residence were crowned with
success.
Luckily the night was almost calm, and
the light wind that prevailed was blowing
across the street. Had a westerly wind
been blowing it is certain that one
side of Kate-street would have been con-
sumed. It is stated that the hall itself
was in darkness shortly after the moving
picture entertainment ended. Some of the
cinematographic plant had been removed
to the railway station, and it was not
until later that the fire was discovered.
It is stated that an assistant at pictures,
whose name is given as Patrick Dettmann,
had occasion to return to the hall to look
for some material about three-quarters of
an hour after the entertainment had con-
cluded, and that he observed the place to
be on fire. He endeavoured to extinguish
the flames, and was burnt about the arms
and chest. His injuries were attended to
by Dr. Davidson. Prior to the fire being
noticed an explosion is said to have been
heard at the rear of the building, and
shortly afterwards the alarm was raised.
The Town Hall was a weatherboard
building, containing a large hall capable
of seating about 350 people, two dressing
rooms, the Mayor's room, and the office.
All the documents, reports, ratebooks, &c.,
and the piano were saved from the build-
ing, but the three iron safes, among other
property, had to be left to their fate. The
building was insured for £2000 with the
National Fire and Marine Insurance Com-
pany of New Zealand. The Mayor of
Sandgate (Alderman Gowen) late last
evening secured a lease of the Gordon
Club Hall, where the council's business
will be carried on today as usual.
The house destroyed was a six-roomed
residence, which had been let furnished,
and it is not known whether or not it
was insured. Nearly all the furniture
was saved by the efforts of the police and
residents. The occupants were asleep at
the time of the outbreak, and they were
roused by the police and others.
While the fire was raging the contents
of the various houses in the vicinity were
hurriedly removed to the street, which
was soon littered with furniture, &c. Prac-
tically the whole of the residents turned
out, and rendered willing and hearty as-
sistance to Sergeant Clare and the other
police officers in endeavouring to prevent
a spread of the flames. Sergeant Clare
organised a bucket brigade, and a con-
stant stream of water carried from the
tanks of the houses around was poured
on the side of the house next to the fire.
The heat was so intense that frequently
the men had to dip their arms and heads
into the water. Wet blankets were also
brought into requisition, and by midnight
all danger of further damage was passed.
There is no fire brigade or any fire fight-
ing apparatus at Sandgate. The necessity
for some protection against fire was
brought up at a meeting of the Progress
Association on the previous evening by
the secretary (Mr. George Morrison), and
the matter has also been several times dis-
cussed at meetings of the Town Council.
It is interesting to note that the question
of securing a water supply is at present
under consideration.
