Title
Sets
PARIS, May 31 (A.A.P.). - Ken Rosewall
and Lewis Hoad to-day won the French doubles
final in straight sets, losing only four games.
The 18-year-old Sydney
boys beat fellow-Austra-
lians Mervyn Rose and
Clive Wilderspin, 6-2,
6-1, 6-1.
The victory gave Rosewall
his second French champion-
ship in two days.
In yesterday's singles final
Rosewall played magnificent^
to beat American Vic Seixas.
6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
To-day Rosewall and Hoad
swamped Rose and Wilder
spin from the first ball.
Wilderspin was the weak
half of the older team. He
double-faulted once and, under
pressure, was feeble at the
net.
Rose was not much better,
and also served several
double-faults in this set.
No Chance
In the second set Rose and
Wilderspin played even worse
tennis.
The Sydney youngsters
simply walked away, giving
the opposition no chance to
settle down.
Even Rose, a Davis Cup
singles player, could hold his
(service only once.
In the last set Hoad was
the best player on the court.
He was brilliant overhead,
and his volleys and smashes
were devastating.
The crowd ironically cheered
every point Rose and Wilder
spin won, and sighed each time
they double-faulted.
Women's Final
Shirley Fry and Doris Hart
kept their women's doubles
title by beating fellow
Americans Maureen Connolly
and Julie Sampson, 6-4, 6-3.
The match gave Hart a
partial revenge for her defeat
yesterday at the hands of
Connolly in the singles final.
It seemed at the start that
there would be a victory for
the 18-year-old challengers,
who went away to a 3-0 lead.
But a series of clever place
ment shots by Hart to the
baseline enabled the veteran
team to resume control and
take four successive games.
Connolly and Sampson then
broke equal on Connolly's
'service, but the younger team
lacked the cohesion of the I
others, and Hart hammered
home some unanswerable
shots to win the set.
Fry and Hart started with
a 2-0 lead in the second set.
Then Sampson took Hart's
service, and the challengers
went away to a 3-2 lead.
But Connolly's play was

nowhere near so good as in
her singles matches, and_ a
run of four wins in succession
gave Fry and Hart the match.
Later to-day Rose and
Maureen Connolly will play
Seixas and Doris Hart in the
mixed doubles final.
Tennis writers in Paris
Sunday newspapers to-day
hailed Rosewall as "l'enfant
terrible" of world tennis.
He is the youngest playei
ever to win the French singles
title, and the first Australian
victor since Jack Crawford 20
years ago.
Australian captain-managei
Harry Hopman thinks Rose
wall's chances of winning
Wimbledon-a feat few win-
ners of the French title have
accomplished in the same year
-are now about equal with
three or four others, with most
to be feared from Drobny,
Hoad, Seixas and Rose.
Henri Cochet, rive times
winner of the French singles
title, "watched every shot of
the final.
He went 'to the dressing
room immediately after the
match, kissed Rosewall on
both cheeks, and said: "You
played real tennis, my boy,
real tennis! And at your age.
too!"
Cochet, whom Crawford
beat in the 1933 final to end
his winning run, said this of
the Rosewall-Seixas final:
"Rosewall showed me what all
great players must have
conception.
"His footwork, his strokes,
his physical fitness, his eye,
his clever concealment and
variation of pace-all these
things stamp him as a real
champion.
"It is truly incredible at his
age."
The American took his de-
feat in fine spirit, and made
no excuses.
"Ken just played too good
for me," he said.
