(Messrs.. HOGAN, MOONEY & *
It is with much regret, which
be shared by a wide circle, that
have to announce the lamented de

of the old-established firm of Hog
Mooney and Co., of Queen-stre
City. The deceased gentleman \\
in his 86th year. He passed aw
peacefully at his residence, 'F
dine,' Fitzroy-street, St. Kilda, i
Sunday, the 30th December. The ei
was most peaceful and happy. Ever, (
thing that medical skill could effe t
was done to prolong the valuab
life, but the end came, as stated, h r
death being as edifying as bis life i
charity. The Rev. G. Byrne and th t
Rev. A. Rohan attended the d- i
ceased gentleman during his last il 1
ness, and he passed away fortified b; i
all the consolations of religion. Dc -
Reginald Morton, of Fitzroy-street; i
St. Kilda, a friend of the family, waii

CAREER OF THE DECEASED j
GENTLEMAN. :
. The late Mr. liogan was born in
Co. Limerick, Ireland, in 1831, and
came to Melbourne in the Great
Britain in 1853. He was occupied
on the gold, diggings till 1805. He
started business in Elizabeth-street,
opposite St. Francis' Church, and
the business prospered there till he
built the up-to-date new premises in
Queen-street in 1901. He was en
gaged in business from '65 to '97, a
space of 32 years, and was recog
nised as the best business man 'in
Melbourne. His word was his bond.
Of. late years, two of his sons,
Thomas and William, became part
ners in the flourishing business, on
which the late Mr. Hdgan has left
the impress of his keen management
and expert direction.
In ,1900 Mrs. Hogan passed away
with the reputation of a truly chari
table and kind heart, the poor losing
a practical friend and sympathiser.
Her maiden name was Miss Mary
Thompson. She was born near the
famous Lakes of Killarney, County
Kerry, Ireland. Her sister, Miss
Sarah Thompson, has been with the
family all her life, and on the death
of Mrs. Hogan she assumed the man
agement of the household at St.
Kilda.
For years the deceased was hon.
treasurer of St. Patrick's Cathedral
Building Fund, and was a familiar
figure at the annual meeting held in
the Cathedral, at which his Grace
the late Archbishop presided. His
Grace paid more than one tribute to
the business capacity of the late Mr.
Hogan, whose great services were
freely given to the Cathedral com
mittee. He took a practical interest
in many charitable institutions, not
ably that of the Home of the Little
Sisters of the Poor, Northcoto, of
which he was treasurer. Each year
he was wont to make an appeal in
'The Advocate' and other papers on
behalf of the Little Sisters. He was
a generous giver to that institution
and other charities. Ireland's cause
had a warm corner in his big, gener
ous heart. He was a true democrat,
, and gave moral and material support
to movements having for their ob
jective the promotion of liberty and
freedom for the masses of the people.
Ho was the first president of the
Celtic Club, and was given an il
luminated address by that body.
Right up to the end ho had the 'use
of his faculties,' and -giive minute
directions in writing as to the de
tails of the funeral. Many were dis
appointed at not being able to show
their respect by attending the funo- ,
ral, which, at his direction, was
strictly private.
Messrs. Thomas and William Hog-an.
are the partners in the firm to-day.
. Other members of the family are
.Tames Hogan, B.A., LL.M., Joseph
Hogan, 3VI.A., LL.M. (of the legal
firm of Hogan and Hogan), and
John E. Hogan, LL.B. In his last
illness the deceased was tenderly
nursed by his niece, Mrs. M. A.
Cannon, who is a certificated nurse.
It is of interest as showing' in what
great respect the deceased gentleman
was held that on his return from a
visit to Holy Ireland he was enter
tained at a banquet given by the
merchants of Melbourne. The gather
ing was representative of all classes
and creeds. The then Mayor of Mel
bourne, the late Sir Samuel Gillott,
occupied the chair, and the late Hon.
Nicholas Fitzgerald, K.C.S.G.,
M.L.C., the vice-chair.
THE FUNERAL.
In accordance with the expressed
wish of the deceased, the funeral was
private. On Monday, 31st Decem
ber, the remains were borne from the
family residence to the St. Kilda ?
Cemetery, and placed in the massive
family vault where rest the remains
r\t Viio irrifn l\Trc T-Tnrrnn. and of
^issie Hogan, who died in infancy —
;he only girl of the family.
The Rev. J. P. Curran, of the Sac
?t'd Heart Church, St. Kilda West,
ivho officiated at the grave, paid a
ribute to the deceased gentleman,
who, he said, with others, had helped
to build up the Church in Victoria,
to which he gave moral and material
support. Had due notice been given
Df the funeral, it would have been a
/erv , large and representative one..
