Fri 12 Feb 1904 - Westralian Worker (Perth, WA : 1900 - 1951)
Page 2 - STATE POLITICS.
STATE POLITICS.
The proposal to take a collective
Labor Ballot for the five goldfields
seats—Hannans, Kalgoorlie, Ivan
hoe, Brown Hill, and Boulder—has
not met with a favorable reception.
Some who advocated it, without
consideration, are now opposed to
it. It is probable that tlie electo
rates named will proceed to indivi
dually select the man they require,
and the campaign will go on
i smoothly and swimmingly without
further delay.
Mr. M. F. Troy has been unani
mously chosen as the Labor candi
date for the Magnet seat. Mr. Troy,
who is young, enthusiastic, and
popular, has been secretary of the
Murchison A.W.A., in which
capacity he has done splendid work,
which may justly be taken as a
guarantee that as a Labor member
he will follow in the footsteps of
his predecessor in the secretaryship,
J. B. Holman.
The Selection Ballot for the Cue
constituency is now on, and appear
ances point to the success of Mr. E.
E. Heitmann of the A.C.E.D.A.,
Day Dawn. The other competitors
are Messrs. J. Ricketts and James
Young, all good, energetic Laborites.
Mr. M. F. Troy had idso been nomi
nated by all the unions in the elec
torate, but drew out of the contest
upon being asked by the Laborites
of Magnet to take on the fight
against J. V. Kearney for the Mag
net. At the moment of writing
both seats—Cue and Magnet—are
within shooting distance, and will
certainly be bagged by the Labor
Party.
A correspondent at Magnet writes:
" In the Cue electorate the selected
man must win. The anions are
splendidly organised, and the boys
are enthusiastic and energetic. With
regard to the Magnet much
apathy prevails. J. V. Kearney, one
of the aspirants, is spending money
liberally. He already has agents
touring the electorate forming com
mittees, and he will take some beat
ing. The Labor man (M. F. Troy)
has set himself a heavy task, and he
will heed to organise his support
and infuse the necessary enthusiasm
to ensure his success, for which we
are all hoping.
• * • • •
It goes without saying that J. B.
Holman is likely to be returned
without opposition, as he has been
already unanimously selected by
some of the unions throughout the
electorate. His work for the dis
trict he represents has been such as
to induce all the residents to view
him favorably, as his efforts have
always been successful and highly
appreciated.
• • • •
Illingworth, marching on Cue, is
hastening to certain defeat.
• *••••
At Magnet, Troy (Labor) will in
all probability be opposed by
Bryant, manager of the Morning
Star ; Kearney, of Wheel of Fortune
mine, Lennonviile ; and Clydesdale,
of Magnet, who ratted when con
testing the selection ballot with
Holman at last General Elections.
Troy seems a certainty, in spite of
strong opposition. >>
