RUGBY LEAGUE
Two Country
men make
State squad
NEWCASTLE: Two Country
First players, centre Neville Eiwin
and second-rower Paul Field, have
been included in a 20-man NSW
squad for the opening State-of-Ori
gin rugby league match against
Queensland next month.
Elwin and Field impressed in the
Country Firsts side which was
beaten 14-30 by Sydney in New
castle yesterday.
The only Sydney Firsts player
passed over for the State squad was
Manly's fullback Graham Eadie.
Injured Parramatta winger Eric
Grothe comes into the side.
Geoff Gerard, Phil Sigsworth,
Pat Jarvis and John Ferguson were
promoted from the Sydney Seconds
side.
The squad will assemble at Red
fern Oval on Tuesday with the side
to be announced on the Sunday
night before the match in Brisbane
on Tuesday, June 7.
The squad is: Brett Kenny,
Gerard, Peter Sterling, Ray Price.
Les Boyd, Sigsworth, Steve Mor
timer, Field, -Jams, Ray Brown,
Max Krilich, Geoff Bugden, Steve
Ella, Wayne Pearce, Chris An
derson, Steve Rogers, Grothe, Greg
Brentnall, Elwin, Ferguson.
? Canterbury-Bankstown seems
certain to be without prop John
Coveney for today's match against
Cronulla-Sutherland at the En
deavour field.
Coveney was carried off during
the Sydney-Country Seconds match
and was found later to have a
cracked rib.
Sydney and Canterbury coach
Ted Glossop intends switching Tas
Baitieri into the front row and
bringing up Mick Pitman, should
Coveney pull out this morning.
Penrith is likely to be without
hooker Royce Simmons, who looked
a mess after being named Man of
the Match in the Seconds match.
His right eye was closed and he has
a suspected fracture of his left
cheekbone.
