A total of 695 public servants will be trans
ferred to Canberra from Melbourne and Sydney
between now and 1971.
The annual report of the
Public Service Board, pub
lished yesterday, said that
295 public servants, from
the Department of Educa
tion and Science, which
has its headquarters in
Sydney, and the Department
of Supply, would be trans
ferred to Canberra during
the next year.
| There are more than
7,000 public servants still
working in Melbourne and
Sydney for such organisa
tions as the PMG, the
Bureau of Meteorology and
the Department of Civil
Aviation.
The report showed that
the number of people em
ployed by the Common
wealth public service in
creased by 4.4 per cent in
the 1967-68 financial year
to a record 211,652.
In the year a record 756
university graduates were
also appointed — 151 more
than the previous year.
In the financial year
ended June 12,549 people
left the service compared
with 13,136 the year before.
Of the total increase in
the year 7,967 were perman
ent placements.
The biggest increase of
3,033 wa« in the Post
master General's Depart
ment followed by the De
partment of the • Interior
with 2,238 and the Depart
ment of Civil Aviation with
480.
