CLARENCE RIVER.
Two dreadful murders have been perpetrated
by the innocent children of the soil. On the
17th February last, a poor shepherd was mur-
dered at the station of A. Boyd, Esq., of New-
ton Boyd, and three or four hundred sheep
driven off; and on the 27th March another
man, of the name of Peter Stevens (about four
months in the colony), was cruelly murdered
at the station of Mann and Hook, and a flock
of 940 sheep driven off- for a repast for these
poor savages ! This last case is truly distress-
ing : the poor man has left a wife and two
children (unprovided for) to lament their loss.
The proprietors, I believe, are poor men,
struggling with the world, and to them it must
be a severe loss.
We have a fellow committed to-day (March
31) for a murder ; his name is Maurice Jones,
free by servitude : ho murdered a mau called
'.Bluey," alias Peter Finn, about six months
ago, and then threw him into a water-hole,
near Mr. S. MacKcnzie's station. Ho was ap-
prehended in Sydney, and forwarded down
here. Ile is an old hand in the colony.
