Rixon seeks
second spot
SYDNEY: Steve Rixon is hoping common
sense prevails when the national selectors meet
to choose the Australian cricket team for the
England tour.
Rixon, arguably Australia's number two wicket
keeper, knows his chances of a tour hinge on whether
the selectors decide to send one or two keepers in the
16-man squad.
In the past, 17 players have toured and the
selection of a second-string gloveman has been a
formality.
Despite the cutback in numbers Rixon aims to be
on the tour.
"I'm happy with my form and it would be terrific
to make it", the NSW keeper said.
"But my main concern at this stage is to help NSW
win the Shield".
Many critics believe the selectors should take two
keepers.
Rod Marsh has had a non-stop itinerary this season
and to send him straight on to an England tour without
a back-up could be asking too much.
It's no secret he's having knee problems from .the
continual squatting his job requires and he may even
have a knee operation before the tour begins.
, If the selectors stick with past policy and send two
keepers, Rixon would be favourite for the job ahead
of SA's Kevin Wright.
