After dislocating his finger, Wayne Phillips watches the rest of NSW's strong play against South Australia
with teammate Glen Bishop at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday.
A timely century
for NSW's Rixon
SYDNEY: NSW wicketkeeper
Steve Rixon hit the most timely cen
tury of his 11 seasons in first-class
cricket in the Sheffield Shield clash
with South Australia at the Sydney
Cricket Ground yesterday.
Rixon's sixth first-class century, an
unbeaten 115, was made in front of
the three Australian selectors, Lawrie
Sawle, Greg Chappell and Rick Mc
Cosker.
NSW made 370 in the first innings
and South Australia was all out yes
terday morning for 260.
NSW skipper Dirk Wellham de
clared his second innings closed at
5.30pm at four for 223 after Rixon's
255 minutes at the crease, leaving
South Australia to get 334.
South Australia's captain David
Hookes made it clear that South Aus
tralia might not take on NSW in a
likely run chase.
"We used to be known as the side
that will chase the runs and too bad
if we don't get them," he said. "But
it's a first-class fixture and you don't
give it away."
South Australia sent John Inverari
ty in with Andrew Hilditch to open
its second innings, but Wellham said
he did not think this indicated that
Hookes had begun to play for a draw.
NSW has already gained four first
innings points and is running second
to Queensland on the Shield table.
South Australia has yet to put points
on the board.
South Australia resumed yesterday
at seven for 221 and was all out for
260 a few minutes after midday.
Rixon opened with John Dyson as
a stand-in for regular opener Steve
Smith, who has muscle trouble. The
pair hit 173 in an opening stand, of
which Dyson made 72 with one six
and seven fours.
But spinner Inverarity, aided by
Ian Carmichael, began a tumble of the
middle order which led to NSW los
ing four wickets for 14 runs in six
overs and 26 minutes.
Wellham went for one, Peter Clif
ford was out for two and Greg Mat
thews came and went without scoring.
But Rixon with Imran Khan took
the score from 187 to 223. Imran
made 23 at just over a run a minute.
Inverarity took three for 50 from 16
overs.
Victoria on road to a draw
MELBOURNE: The
forgotten man of Vic
torian cricket, Mick Tay
lor, set his State on the
road to a draw yesterday
against the West Indies
on the third day of their
match at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground.
Taylor scored his sec
ond century this season
and the eighth of his first
class career to boost Vic
toria to four for 379 when
bad light stopped play 37
minutes early, leaving
him unbeaten on 125.
The West Indians were
seven declared for 558 in
their first innings, but a
determined Victorian ef
fort has made a draw
almost inevitable.
For Taylor, a tireless
and reliable batsman,
yesterday's crowd of
20,000 was the largest he
has played before.
"You arc always toey
when you go out to bat,"
he said. "But today I was
very nervous in front of
such a large crowd be
cause the second-highest
I've ever played in front
of is about 1,500."
He made more than
1.000 runs for Victoria
last season and scored
118 in a Sheffield Shield
match against Tasmania
two weeks ago.
Taylor, 29, Victoria's
vice-captain last year,
feels he is not too old to
break into the Test ranks.
"If 1 keep making runs
then I must get closer to
selection," he said.
"Blokes are now getting
their first game at the age
of 38."
Any hopes he has for
making a double century
today might be dashed by
Victorian skipper Ray
Bright, who is consider
ing an early declaration
"to make a game of it".
Taylor batted for 215
minutes, faced 196 balls
and hit 11 boundaries,
most of them cover
drives.
Victoria resumed yes
terday at one for 118. The
not-out batsmen were
Jones on 50 and opener
David Robinson on 42.
The pair set a Victorian
record of 114 for a sec
ond-wicket stand against
the West Indies.
Their partnership came
to an end when Jones, on
71, was caught by stand
in wicketkeeper Thelston
Payne off off-spinner
Roger Harper. Robinson,
52, followed soon after
wards when he was
caught at second slip by
Harper.
Warren Whiteside and
Taylor then combined in
a partnership of 161 in
191 minutes before
Whiteside was dismissed
for 57 when he appeared
to lose sight of a delivery
and was trapped lbw by
Courtney Walsh.
The West Indians had
little to be thrilled about
yesterday except for
Walsh's dogged per
formance. Although he
no-balled 15 times, he
finished with three for
106 off 21 overs.
