Death of Mr. Cowie
HEAD MASTER OF BOWRAL
HIGH SCHOOL.
We regret to have to record that
the long illness of Mr. Herbert Cowie,
B.A., Headmaster of Bowral High
School, terminated in his death, at
Bowral, on Friday last, at the con.
paratively early age of 54 years.
For the past three years Mr. Cowie
had been in indifferent health and his
condition gradually became worse
until this year he was frequently con
fined to his home. Throughout his
long illness he was attended by Mrs.
Cowie with wifely devotion and had
the advice of eminent doctors, but
all without avail.
Mr. Cowie was the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cowie and was
born at Newcastle. He was educated
at Junction and Cook's Hill Public
Schools and was subsequently in
charge there. At later dates, he wbf
Assistant Headmaster at Maitland
High and at Newcastle High, Maths, j
Master at North Sydney High and*
at Svdnev Technical High, Believing
Headmaster at Goulburn and at New- '
castle High, and Headmaster at Dub
bo and at Bowral. He had been 39
years in the Department of Educa
tion.
Mr. Cowie was a B.A. of Sydney
University, where he took honors in
mathematics.
He married a daughter of Mrs.
Matthews and the late Mr. William
Mathews. of Svdnev. who survives
him. Mr. W. J. Cowie, of Manic*- 1
ville, and Mr. Reg. Cowie, of Clovelly,
»re his brothers.
Mr. Cowie was the first Head
master of the new Bowral High
School, which was opened in 19jO.
In that position he won the affection
of the students and the esteem of all
who came in contact with him. A
man of sterling character and high
ideals, he endeavored to make the
High School s living force for good
in the community.
Of the thousands of students who

long career in the schools, there are
Tew that will hear of his death with
out a feeling of personal loss. He
retained the confidence and goodwill
of his students long after they passed
from his care.
The deepest sympathy is expressed
for Mrs. Cowie throughout the Ber
rima District. During, his Head
mastership st Bowral, Mrs. Cowie
ever stood beside her husband in pro
moting the welfare of the school and
nowhere will deeper sympathy be felt
for her than amongst the students in
whose welfare she took so keen an
interest.
