Ablett snatches win from Saints
MELBOURNE: Geelong's Gary
Ablett single-handedly snatched
victory from an unlucky St Kilda at
Kardinia Park yesterday, continu-
ing the Cats' schizophrenic AFL
season.
With the Saints leading by three
goals 10 minutes into the final term,
Ablett let lose with five goals in 14
minutes, to snare a 17.11 (113)
16.14 (110) victory for the Cats.
But Geelong did little to dispel
the theory that when the pressure is
on, many of its players go missing.
Its goal-less third quarter was so
dismal that coach Malcolm Blight
was booed to the huddle by disap-
pointed Geelong supporters.
Blight dismissed the heckling.
"They pay their money, they can
do what they like," he said.
St Kilda — without key forwards
Tony Lockett and Stewart Leowe,
state ruck rover Robert Harvey,
Tim Pekin, Mick Dwyer, Gordon
Fode and Dean Greig through inju-
ry — looked to have the match in
its keeping at the last change when
it was leading by 26 points.
However, Ablett responded to
the challenge in characteristic fash-
ion. His first goal from the middle
of the pack made the margin 18
points. Goals at the 12, 17 and 22
minute marks edged the Cats to
within two points.
At the 23-minute mark he put the
icing on the cake, and the home
team was in front for the first time
for more than 30 minutes.
But even after his seventh goal
— a ball-bursting set shot from
50m — the Saints were down but
not out.
St Kilda forward Rod Keogh
took a free kick 30m from goal on
the boundary line with less than 60
seconds remaining.
But he opted to short pass to
Nicky Winmar which was cut off by
a desperate Cats' defence.
After the match, St Kilda coach
Stan Alves paid tribute to his young
players, two of whom had just com-
peted in their first senior AFL
game.
But it was the oldest player on the
ground, Saints' captain Danny
Frawley, who grabbed the limelight
— making Barry Stoneham's re-
turn to AFL ranks a day to forget.
Alves said he was pleased with
the way his charges shut down the
dangerous Geelong midfield for the
first three quarters.
"Today we started to play a
brand of football that had quality,
especially the performances of
some of the young blokes." he said.
