Sat 11 Apr 1903 - Herald (Adelaide, SA : 1899 - 1910)
Page 8 - THE MORTGAGEE.
THE MORTGAGEE.
We bring the wilderness to bounds ;
We grub the bush to meads ;
Tn sour or sullen savage grounds
We sow Advance's seeds ;
We grade the mountains, paint the hills
With patterned greenery,
And through Saharas lead the rills—
To feed the Mortgagee.
Our sons have blunted all their wits
With chores of field and wood ;
Their "poddy" drudgery unfits
Our maids for motherhood ;
Our wives wear rags and yellow grow
With dairy's agony ;
Our own old hopes died long ago—
To clothe the Mortgagee.
We face the drought, that knows so well
To score the brow with care,
To hand us from the bar of hell
Tha stirrup-cup, Despair.
We live it down ; then stem the floods,
Then locust-plagues bid .flee—
To put those diamonds in the "duds"
Of Mrs. Mortgagee.
All mental joys we sacrifice,
Have no artistic goals ;
The daily press's slush and vice
Monotonise our souls.
But yet we tax ourselves to build
Endowed academies
That Culture's rose may be distilled—
For sons of Mortgagees.
We build us homes in town, in bush ;
Where'er we go, bring wealth ;
Plant vineyards, but the grapes we crush
Are soul's and body's health
We see ourselves, wives, children brought
To servitude's degree—
That high-class husbands may be bought
For Misses Mortgagee.
To dig canals through shifting sand,
Reclaim the wilderness,
And fit the solitary land
For servile Trade's caress ;
With girdling rail and madrigal
Of village greenery,
We pile the cairn of debt—and all
To grease the Mortgagee.
Our ** conscript fathers" were so wise,
So prescient in their thought,
They "slung" the land as 'twere a prize
To whomsoever sought.
We, hungry, rushed it to a man ;
" But ah ! too late we sre
Twas but a well-concocted plan
To breed the Mnrtoraope
-Danton (in the "Bulletin").
We are requested to draw attention to
the forty-seventh annual art union to be
drawn by the Sight Hours' Committee in
Melbourne, on May 6. It is stated to be
the oldest and most popular of those held
in Victoria. In consequence of the pro
ceeds being devoted to the hospitals and
public charities of Australia it - always
receives a very cordial support. An
advertisement appears elsewhere in this
issue, which shows the first prize to be
£1,000, and there are 139 important
prizes ranging in value from £1 to £150.
Tickets are only one shilling each ; they
may be obtained direct from Mr. Theo.
W. Heide, 312 Flinders Street, Mel
bourne, who has acted as the representa
tive of the committee for this State for
several years.
